Codlea combines historic buildings with hiking destinations in the Măgura Codlei area and Ștrandul din Codlea. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: the Evangelical Church and its architectural history, trails through the forest, or the traditional Crown Festival in June. The destinations described here range from a specific peak to urban cultural buildings and a festival featuring regional customs.

Hiking trails around Măgura Codlei

There are six hiking trails in the Măgura Codlei area, homologated in 2021. Their destinations include the summit of Vârful Măgura Codlei, the ruins of Cetatea Neagră and Ștrandul Codlea with its two associated lakes. The summit is 1,292 metres high. These destinations give you a clear direction when choosing a route: you can focus on a viewpoint, the castle ruins or the Ștrandul area.

One route described in more detail is Zona Maial–Poiana Mărul Dulce–Cetatea Neagră. It is considered easy, follows a forest road for most of its length and runs entirely through the forest; there are no exposed sections on this route. This distinguishes its described profile from simply naming a destination such as the summit or the Ștrandul. Trail conditions and markings may change, so it is a good idea to check both before setting out.

Fortified church and historic architecture

The Evangelical Church of Codlea was built in the second half of the 13th century. A fortified church was built around it in 1432. Notable details inside include a ceiling dating from 1702 and an organ with 2,000 pipes. Access requires an advance request by phone or email, so arrange your visit ahead of time.

The Cultural House and Biblioteca Codlea also showcase different architectural influences. The Cultural House is a Neoclassical building constructed between 1881 and 1925, with Baroque influences and elements of Saxon architecture. Built in 1908, Biblioteca Codlea initially also served as a magistrate’s court and as a post and telegraph office with the telephone exchange of the time. Its architecture combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements. A look at these buildings reveals a range of stylistic combinations rather than a focus on a single era.

Ștrandul Codlea, nature and the Crown Festival

Ștrandul din Codlea was established in 1904 through the efforts of the Association for the Beautification of Codlea. Its pool is fed by a spring of the Goldbach, Pârâul de Aur; the water remains at a temperature of 18 °C year-round. The area also includes two lakes covering 7 hectares. They are rich in fish and used for recreation and leisure. These details distinguish the spring and pool from the lakes, which are described as separate parts of the area.

The traditional Crown Festival takes place every June in Zona Maial. The festival features performances and traditional customs; dates and programme may vary. If the festival is a focus of your trip, check the specific event dates in advance. Part of the administrative territory of the city of Codlea also belongs to the Natura 2000 European ecological network. This means your trip can include a choice of different themes: the town’s cultural heritage, a forest trail, water destinations and an annual festival.
