Șirnea between village history and cycling routes
Accommodation in Șirnea
Șirnea lies at 1,244 meters at the foot of the Piatra-Craiului Mountains and is considered a pastoral settlement. The village belongs to the Poarta Carpaților ecotourism network, which comprises nine marked trails totaling about 100 kilometers. The roughly 100 kilometers refers to the total length of the network, not a single tour. For orientation, these are two different scales: the landscape description places Șirnea by the mountains; the trail information describes a network with several marked routes.
History and cultural events
Șirnea is known as Romania’s first tourist village. Biology teacher Nicolae Frunteș initiated a project to promote tourism. The designation places the village in its historical context, while the project highlights the initiative of a specific person. Historical references also include the Muzeul Etnografic, Olimpic și de Artă Contemporană „Nicolae Frunteș” Șirnea: the foundations of the museum were laid in 1965. The name Nicolae Frunteș thus appears both in connection with the tourism initiative and in the museum’s full name.
Focul lui Sumedru, also called Focul de Sânmedru, takes place every year on the night of October 25 to 26; locals and tourists take part. On July 5, 2026, the 57th edition of Măsura Laptelui took place in Șirnea. A tasting of bulz, cheese, milk, and other traditional local products was planned for the recent celebration.
Cycling routes and bike options
Two cycling loops offer different kinds of guidance. The Șirnea–Cheile Dambovicioarei–Valea Seaca a Pietrelor–Șirnea loop is described as generally easy and considered manageable for amateurs. The Fundata–Șirnea–Fundata loop is considered relatively easy and is about 15 kilometers each way; the total elevation gain is 250 meters. When choosing, the first loop primarily gives an indication of difficulty, while the second provides additional planning details on distance and elevation gain. For the Fundata loop, the roughly 15 kilometers refers to the distance in each direction, and the 250 meters refers to the total ascent. This lets you consider separately the specific measures that matter for planning your ride. Check current route and traffic conditions before setting out.
Classic mountain bikes can be rented in Șirnea daily from 09:00 to 20:00; reservations should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Check rental times and reservations with the provider before your trip. Guided, custom e-bike tours can be arranged on request and require prior coordination. The distinction matters for planning ahead: the MTB rental has a fixed lead time of at least 24 hours, whereas a custom e-bike tour is arranged only on request and after prior coordination.
