Fundata brings together a high-altitude commune, sports, outdoor activities, and local history. The Cheile-Grădiștei-Fundata Resort features an Alpine Coaster and an adventure park; hiking and cycling trails, as well as historical and cultural sites, offer further highlights. If you’re looking for hotels in Fundata, choosing a particular leisure activity, route, or cultural aspect of your trip can be a useful starting point.

The commune’s landscape

The commune of Fundata occupies the upper levels of the Bran Platform, at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,300 metres. Some residential buildings stand above 1,300 metres, and a few even reach 1,400 metres. In the wider landscape, the commune lies in the Rucăr-Bran Corridor, between the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului massifs.

Sports and activities

The Alpine Coaster at the Cheile-Grădiștei-Fundata Resort is about 1.6 kilometres long and has two uphill tracks. It is intended for adults and children aged three and over. Children between the ages of three and seven may use the coaster only with an adult. If you’re travelling with children, this supervision rule is a specific point to consider when planning.

At the adventure park, the main activity is climbing trees along varied courses. This sets it apart from the coaster ride: here, the focus is on courses, while the coaster has clearly specified age limits. The Cheile-Grădiștei complex in Fundata is also home to Romania’s only internationally homologated biathlon arena. The resort’s sports facilities are at an altitude of 1,300 metres and serve training camps as well as national and international competitions.

Hiking and cycling trails

Hiking route 01MN30 connects the village of Fundata with Cabana Padina. It passes over Muntele Bucșa and by Refugiul Strunga. A different type of route is the Piatra Craiului National Park’s red-marked cycling loop No. 11: it runs from DĆ¢mbovicioara via Podu DĆ¢mboviței, Valea Cheii, Fundățica, Fundata, Șirnea, and Ciocanu, and back to DĆ¢mbovicioara.

The two routes differ both in their mode of travel and in their itineraries: the hiking route connects Fundata with Cabana Padina and names mountain waypoints, while the marked cycling trail is a loop through several villages. If you’re deciding between hiking and cycling, this difference in route layout offers a practical basis for comparison, without requiring you to estimate walking or cycling times.

History and culture

Historically, Fundata lay on the border between the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and Wallachia. Fundata was also the first locality liberated by Romanian troops. The village of Fundata is home to the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God (ā€œAdormirea Maicii Domnuluiā€), which dates back to 1843.

Șirnea is home to the Nicolae Frunteș Museum. Traditionally, the flame for Olympic Day is lit there on 23 June. If you’d like to plan your trip around this date, check the schedule for the year in question, as the specific programme may vary. The traditional ā€œMăsura Lapteluiā€ festival is also associated with Șirnea: the 57th edition in 2026 featured traditional food, folk music, scenes from everyday life, and shepherding games.
