Ghimbav: Fortified Church, Church Art and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Ghimbav
Ghimbav can be understood through its transport routes, churches, and landscape.
Getting your bearings in Ghimbav
Brașov–Ghimbav International Airport is located in the northern part of the city. Railway Main Line 200—Curtici, Arad, Simeria, Sibiu, and Brașov—also runs through Ghimbav, parallel to DN1; the city is served by a railway station. These are distinct reference points for planning your arrival: the airport’s location in the north and the railway line that runs through the city. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable.
The Ghimbășel River is another local landmark. It runs through Ghimbav and gave the city its Romanian name. Alongside the transport routes, the river and the story behind the city’s name offer a tangible connection to the place.
Churches and architectural history
Ghimbav’s fortified Evangelical church is a Gothic basilica. It was built in the 15th century by reconstructing an earlier Romanesque building. Two building phases can therefore be distinguished: the older Romanesque structure and the Gothic reconstruction. Its interior is covered with ornamental floral paintings from 1902, extending across the walls and vaults. The painted decoration marks a distinctly later period than the basilica’s medieval architectural history.
The Orthodox Church of “Sfânta Treime” tells a different architectural story. It was built in 1780 from rubble stone and bricks. Congregation members took part in the construction, and the Brașov merchant Ioan Boghici also contributed. The 15-metre-high tower was completed in 1830. Fragments of the original wall paintings have been preserved inside.
Comparing the two churches reveals different historical and architectural points of reference: the fortified church is defined by its Gothic basilica and earlier Romanesque origins, while “Sfânta Treime” is distinguished by its 1780 construction, the tower completed later, and surviving fragments of paintings. If you are interested in church history, these details offer two distinct perspectives on Ghimbav’s architectural heritage.
Traditions and mountain views
Zilele Ghimbavului celebrates local traditions and customs. The festival takes place every year on the first weekend after the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the date for the year in question.
From Ghimbav, you can see the nearby mountain peaks of Postăvarul, Măgura Codlei, and Cristianul Mare, as well as the more distant Bucegi Mountains, Piatra Craiului, and the Făgăraș Mountains. Distinguishing between the nearby peaks and the more distant ranges helps put the view into perspective: it encompasses both individual nearby elevations and a broader horizon.
Cycling and courses
One activity described is the “Ghimbav – Râșnov – Cheișoara – Rezervaţia de stejari seculari – Ghimbav” cycling loop, which starts in Ghimbav. As route conditions may change, check them before setting out. The loop gives you a practical way to include cycling in your time in Ghimbav.
Pilot training and skydiving courses are organized at Aeroclubul Ghimbav “Mircea Zorileanu.” If you are interested in one of these courses, check the participation requirements before your trip. Along with the cycling loop, these courses broaden the range of activities you might consider when planning your time in Ghimbav.
