When exploring Bihor, you can pursue a variety of travel interests: architecture and sightseeing in Oradea, caves with distinctive landscapes and archaeological finds, or activities in the mountain regions. Each place has its own focus. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth first considering which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Oradea: Architecture and Sightseeing

Oradea City Hall Palace is open to visitors. Its eclectic architecture and three courtyards give the building a distinctive, well-structured layout. Check the current access arrangements before your visit. The Sfântul Nicolae Church, also known as the cathedral, is open to the public for both sightseeing and religious services. Visiting and service arrangements may change, so checking in advance can help with your planning.

Karst, Gorges and Nature

Peștera Vadu Crișului combines a cave with striking gorge scenery: the cave lies at the heart of the Crișul-Repede Gorge. A stream runs through it and forms a waterfall after emerging from the cave. The visitor route takes 30 to 60 minutes; visitor groups are accompanied by a cave guide who provides explanations in Romanian and Hungarian.

The Valea Sighiștelului valley is home to more than 160 caves and ends in a gorge with narrow, sheer rock walls. Another natural highlight is the Padiș–Cetățile Ponorului karst area, an important tourist area in the Apuseni Mountains in Bihor. Cetățile Ponorului is one of the natural attractions mentioned in the area. At Cefa Nature Park, activities such as fishing, birdwatching, boating and horseback riding take center stage.

Peștera Unguru Mare also appeals to visitors interested in both nature and culture. It lies in a limestone cliff by the Crișul Repede; its entrance is more than 30 meters high. The “Galeria Sacră” contains a Bronze Age necropolis. This means the cave can be understood not only through the shape of its rock formations, but also through the site’s archaeological history.

Cave Visits and Their Different Highlights

Peștera Meziadului has a developed, 1,100-meter-long figure-eight route. It passes through the Active Gallery and the Upper Level. The cave is home to bat colonies of up to about 14,000 animals; seasonal counts may vary. Check visitor regulations before your trip.

Peștera Urșilor can only be visited in a group and accompanied by a guide. The visitor pavilion includes a museum and a 488-meter-long gallery designated for tourists. The cave is located near the village of Chișcău in the commune of Pietroasa, Bihor County, at an altitude of 482 meters, and contains numerous cave bear fossils. This stop therefore combines clearly regulated visitor arrangements with a direct glimpse into the cave’s natural history.

Hiking and Mountain Activities

The Padiș–Vârtop tourist area has 27 developed hiking trails. Check route conditions before setting out. Vârtop also forms the southern boundary of Apuseni Nature Park. Activities offered there include mountain hiking, mountain biking, alpine skiing, ski touring, via ferrata, climbing, abseiling and specialized caving. The Vârtop holiday village is located in the Bihor Mountains at an altitude of 1,150 meters, on the border between Bihor and Alba counties and alongside national road DN75.

Stâna de Vale is a mountain resort at an altitude of 1,102 meters. Its features include mineral springs, waterfalls and the landscapes of the Apuseni Mountains. Visitors can enjoy alpine skiing, ski touring, mountain hiking, climbing and waterfall abseiling here. As seasonal facilities may change, it is advisable to check the latest information if you are planning activities for a specific period.
