Stâna de Vale: Hiking and a Prayer Trail
Accommodation in Stâna de Vale
Stâna de Vale combines marked hiking trails with a clear religious focus. For planning purposes, you can consider the trail options, specific routes, and religious occasions separately: alongside hikes, there is a prayer trail and an annual pilgrimage.
Location and trail options
Stâna de Vale lies at an altitude of about 1,100 metres in the Apuseni Mountains, at the foot of the Vlădeasa Massif. A description published in 2021 lists eleven marked hiking trails in the resort area; the number may change over time. It is therefore a good idea to check current trail information when choosing a specific route. Stâna de Vale is also one of the places in Bihor County with mineral waters.
Hikes by distance and destination
The official circular route from Stâna de Vale to Cascada Moara Dracului is nine kilometres long and follows an out-and-back route; it was homologated in 2006. The Calea Sfintei Cruci prayer trail is 594 metres long. The two routes differ considerably in length and in their destinations: one leads to the waterfall, while the other centres on the prayer trail. You can therefore take both the distance and the occasion into account when choosing.
The figure of eleven refers to the number of marked trails in the resort area; the distances in kilometres and metres, by contrast, refer to individual routes. This means you can treat the general range of trails and the specific routes as separate planning questions.
Prayer trail and pilgrimage
The prayer trail is located near the Mănăstirii Fericiților Episcopi Români Martiri. Sections of former railway tracks have been repurposed as crosses along the prayer trail. This historical connection complements the route’s religious character; the trail was blessed in 2023.
Every year around 2 June, a pilgrimage is held in Stâna de Vale in honour of the blessed Greek Catholic martyr bishops, particularly Blessed Valeriu Traian Frențiu, a martyr bishop. If you plan to travel for this occasion, check the date for the relevant year.
The priests serving in Stâna de Vale welcome everyone who wishes to pray, pause for reflection, or discover the history and spirituality of this place in the Eparchy of Oradea. The prayer trail is a specific route, whereas the pilgrimage is a recurring annual event. If you are visiting for the pilgrimage, timing is important; you can treat the prayer trail as a separate walk.
Getting there and regional orientation
County road DJ 764A connects Beiuș, Comuna Budureasa, and Stâna de Vale. Through its connection with DJ 108J, DJ 764A provides access towards Coada Lacului, Barajul Leșu, and Remeți. These roads provide two reference points for regional planning: the connection between the three places mentioned and access towards the other destinations.
