The Padiș tourist area lies in the northern part of the Munții Bihor, a mountain range in the Munții Apuseni. The Padiș tourist area includes the enclosed Padiș–Cetățile Ponorului basin. The Padiș–Cetățile Ponorului karst area is considered the most important tourist area in the Munții Apuseni. There are 27 marked hiking trails in the Padiș–Vârtop tourist area. The individual routes differ significantly in duration, difficulty, and winter guidance.

Karst and Waterways

Izbucul Ponor drains water from streams that disappear underground on the Padiș Plateau. The visitor trail to Izbucul Ponor leads to a spring inside a small grotto. The hike is considered relatively easy and takes about 30 minutes. At Cascada Evantai, the water of the Galbena Valley emerges from a cave and plunges about ten meters.

The named karst formations can also be distinguished by their measurements. The portal of Peștera Cetățile Ponorului is 75 meters high and is described as Europe’s highest cave portal. Avenul Gemănata on the route through Lumea Pierdută has an 82-meter vertical drop. Avenul Borțig is about 40 meters deep and is described as Europe’s second-largest ice cave, after the Scărișoara Glacier. Peștera Șura Boghii is 212 meters long. These figures refer to different features: portal height, vertical drop, depth, and cave length.

Hikes and Time Planning

The circular route through Lumea Pierdută crosses the karst plateau, is quite challenging, and takes about five hours. Circuitul Cetăților Ponorului is a difficult circular hike of approximately six and a half hours. Safety cables are installed at key points along the route. Four viewing balconies along the circuit were built by Czaran Gyula in the 19th century. In terms of time, the range therefore runs from the relatively easy, approximately 30-minute hike to Izbucul Ponor to longer, more challenging circular hikes.

The visitor trail to Pietrele Galbenei is a short, moderately difficult detour from the classic Circuitul Văii Galbena. In winter, the circular route through Lumea Pierdută, Circuitul Cetăților Ponorului, and the visitor trail to Pietrele Galbenei are not recommended. The trail to the Pietrele Boghii viewpoint is prohibited in winter. These instructions differ in their strength: for the three hikes mentioned, the recommendation is not to undertake them in winter; the trail to Pietrele Boghii is prohibited.

Natural Monument and Visitor Information

Pietrele Galbenei is a protected natural monument and has been a geological reserve since 2000. The visitor and tourist information center of the Parcul Natural Apuseni administration is located at the Padiș forestry district office. A forestry district office and a supply point are located in the La Grajduri clearing; most tourists who camp in tents stay there. As visitor facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit.
