If you want to take landscape and cultural heritage into account when choosing your destination, Hidişelu de Sus offers several different points of interest. These include archaeological sites, the Betfia Natura 2000 site, examples of cultural events and a ski slope in Hidişelu de Jos. National Road DN 76 crosses the commune between Oradea and Beiuş and provides a wider regional reference point for the area.

Hilly landscape and archaeological sites

The commune of Hidişelu de Sus lies in the central south of Bihor County, in the Tăşad Hills. Its local hills have broad, rounded interfluves; the relief energy ranges from 100 to almost 300 metres. Relief energy describes the range of the local terrain; the approximately 220 and 260 metres, by contrast, refer to the elevations of the named landforms. The figures represent different topographic perspectives. The archaeological site “Şumugiu – Biserica turcilor” is located on the crest of the approximately 220-metre-high Dealul Cionului. A second site, “Situl arheologic de la Mierlău – La Cetăţuie,” lies north-northwest of Mierlău on a wooded spur at an elevation of approximately 260 metres. The two site profiles therefore differ not only in their approximate elevation but also in their landform. Interfluves are elevated areas between valleys; their broad, rounded shape defines the hilly terrain.

Betfia and the natural environment

The Betfia Natura 2000 site (ROSCI0008) extends across the communes of Hidişelu de Sus, Oşorhei and Sânmartin. It is considered important for bats, amphibians and reptiles. The protected-area designation therefore spans several communes and covers multiple animal groups. This is a different thematic focus from that of the archaeological sites: Betfia presents the region in terms of nature conservation and animal groups, while the sites are defined by their topographic locations.

Cultural connections

A previous cultural-patriotic programme at the Hidişelu de Sus Cultural Centre featured patriotic songs, Christmas carols and folk dances. The “Datina Hidișelului” ensemble performed folk dances from Bihor as part of a cultural programme. At a Heroes’ Day commemoration, the route ran from the Orthodox Church of “Sfânta Treime” to the Heroes’ Monument. The Bihor association gives the dances a regional connection; the commemoration has a different emphasis from a cultural programme.

Rural tourism and winter sports

The local approach to rural tourism includes traditional local products marketed together with guesthouses. A ski slope has been set up in Hidişelu de Jos, where winter sports can be enjoyed. Unlike the permanent landscape and archaeological information, this activity depends on conditions at the time of travel. Check access and current operating conditions in advance if winter sports are important to your stay.
