Arad offers plenty to explore during a stay focused on culture, architectural history and nature. The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie covers the city’s history from the 12th century to 1919. The city also has notable buildings, monuments and activities along the Mureș River. If you’re looking for a hotel in Arad, you can plan your trip around whether you’re most interested in history and architecture or an excursion through the river landscape.

City History and Fortifications

The Muzeul de Istorie și Arheologie presents Arad’s history chronologically and thematically. The period covered extends from the 12th century to 1919. These two ways of organizing the exhibition offer different perspectives: you can follow developments over time or focus on its thematic structure.

Cetatea Aradului is a late Vauban-style fortress. Its six-bastioned, star-shaped layout is a defining feature of its design. Construction began in 1762 and took more than 20 years. Both the fortress’s layout and its long construction period are among Arad’s defining historical themes.

Architecture and Monuments

Different architectural influences come together at the Palatul Cultural: its façade is neoclassical, while the side wings draw on the Italian Renaissance style. The side facing the park is inspired by the Gothic elements of Hunedoara Castle. The building thus combines different design elements rather than following a single style. The Palatul Cultural currently houses the headquarters of the County Museum and the State Philharmonic. Check the current status of these institutions before visiting.

The Statue of Liberty stands in Parcul Reconcilierii. Nearby is the 9-metre-high Arcul de Triumf. Its depictions feature prominent figures from Romanian history; the work was created by sculptor Ioan Bolborea. The two monuments can therefore be considered both in terms of their proximity and their different forms.

The 38-metre-high Galeriile „Turnul de apă“ was once the tallest building in the city. Today, the gallery houses a permanent water exhibition as well as numerous temporary art exhibitions. The Neological Synagogue offers a different kind of interior design, with a Spanish-Moorish interior featuring rich, colourful geometric ornamentation and a high-quality organ.

River Landscapes and Tours

Parcul Natural Lunca Mureșului stretches from Arad along the Mureș River to the Hungarian border and covers 17,455 hectares. Its size makes clear that the river landscape extends beyond the city. Two different activities along the Mureș may be of interest when planning your trip: a water route for eco-tours and a cycling trail through forest and typical floodplain habitats.

The „Arad-Pecica“ route on the Mureș is designed for eco-tours by canoe or kayak. It is 25 km long and takes 3 to 4 hours to complete. Water conditions and availability may change, so check them before setting out. The „Arad-Pecica“ cycling trail is a separate activity: it starts at Centrul de Vizitare Ceala near Municipiul Arad, ends at Ferma de Bivoli in Pecica, and passes through forest and typical floodplain habitats along the Mureș.

The same name, „Arad-Pecica“, refers here to two different activities: a route along the river with a set duration, and a cycling route with specified endpoints and landscape sections. This distinction can help you decide which type of excursion best suits your trip. Before setting out, you should also check the current conditions on the cycling route.

When looking for a hotel in Arad, the focus of your trip can provide a starting point: would you prefer to explore history and architecture, or plan a water-based or cycling tour? This way, you can begin planning with the interests that matter to you during your stay.
