Alt-Petschka: Nature, Cycling and History
Accommodation in Alt-Petschka
Alt-Petschka (Pecica) offers travelers a range of points of interest: the floodplain along the Mureș, a nature-focused cycling route, and archaeological and religious heritage. If you’re looking for a hotel, your plans for your time here can help you decide: would you mainly like to spend time outdoors, or explore history and architecture?
Mureș Floodplains and Natural Landscape
The Mureș forms broad meanders and oxbow lakes in the Pecica area, which provide valuable habitats for the region’s flora and fauna. The protected natural landscape of “Lunca Mureșului” near Pecica also includes oxbow lakes of the Mureș, floodplain vegetation and a diverse birdlife. Fishing and birdwatching offer practical ways to engage with this natural environment.
This gives you two ways to experience the landscape: birdwatching focuses your attention on wildlife, while the river channels and floodplain vegetation shape the habitat. If you’d like to include nature in your trip, these differences can help with your planning.
Cycling Through Forest and Floodplains
The “Arad-Pecica” cycle route ends in Pecica at the buffalo farm. It passes through forest and along the banks of the Mureș through floodplain habitats, where mammals and birds can often be spotted. Information boards provide details about the protected area, while rest stops and recreation areas offer places to take a break. The route combines cycling with landscape and nature observation.
The Pecica buffalo farm was inaugurated as a tourist attraction on May 12, 2012, near the center of Pecica and in the surroundings of the “Lunca Mureșului” Nature Park. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
A nature conservation idea also focuses on buffalo: the reintroduction of a buffalo population was proposed in Pecica. Grazing was intended to promote the natural flora in the nature park and remove non-native vegetation. This was a proposal for landscape management.
Archaeological Traces and Church Art
The “Dealul Vechi” archaeological site is also known as “Movila dacică de la Pecica” or “Șanțul Mare.” It contains traces of Neolithic cultures, the Free Dacians and the first centuries of the Middle Ages. These different periods make the site a point of interest for anyone curious about the area’s long history.
The Biserica Romano-Catolică “Duminica Sfintei Treimi” stands in the center of Pecica. The church was built in the late 19th century in the Baroque style, around 1887. Inside is a painting by Rezso Gyongyossy. The architecture and artwork offer different points of cultural and historical interest: the style of the church building and the work of a named artist.
