Buteni lies in the middle Crișul Alb Valley, three kilometers before the area known locally as “Cheile Cociubei.” Here, the valley setting is intertwined with art, sacred architecture and local traditions.

Sculpture Ensemble and Landscape

The Mihai Buculei sculpture ensemble stands on Dealul Groșilor near Buteni. It comprises five monumental limestone works created between 1980 and 1984. Their titles are “Fereastră către Dorul Iancului,” “Masa pentru amintirea străbunilor,” “Sanctuar,” “Ultimul căzut” and “Fântâna Iancului.” The artist, material and period of creation link the works as a group, while the five titles distinguish the individual pieces. The ensemble is included in the list of protected art monuments, monuments and memorial ensembles and is designated a nationally significant protected area under Law 5/2000.

Churches and Musical History

A wooden church dedicated to “Bunavestire” was consecrated in Buteni in 1728. The present-day church was built between 1927 and 1929 to plans by Timișoara architect Conrad Richter. It contains an iconostasis carved by Ioan Novacovici in 1809, which was later transferred from the older church to the house of worship built between 1927 and 1929. This brings together furnishings from 1809 and a building from the early 20th century; the dates mark different stages.

Four school choirs were first documented in Buteni on December 20, 1881. In March 2025, at the Feast of the Annunciation in Buteni Parish, the parish choir “Buna-Vestire,” conducted by Ioan Gheorghieș, sang the liturgical responses. Thus, a choral reference from 1881 and a church occasion from 2025 stand side by side in time.

Museum and Local Traditions

Exhibits at the Buteni Ethnographic Museum include Dacian pottery fragments from the 2nd century BC, discovered on Sângioara Hill. The museum also holds paintings by local artists, including Moț Simion, Veselina Clepea, Petru Lucaci and Dan Miculiț. The pottery fragments and paintings offer different ways into the collections: archaeological finds with a specific discovery site sit alongside works by local artists.

The Armindeni tradition in Buteni includes decorating gates with green linden branches in spring. The branches are considered a symbol of people’s connection with the yield of the land. The local development strategy for 2021–2027 also lists pottery, leatherwork and rope-making as traditional crafts still practiced in the administrative area of Buteni commune.

Roads and Activities

National Road DN79A runs through Buteni, where it intersects with County Road DJ793 between Buteni and Șintea Mare. Fishing in the Crișul Alb Valley is mentioned as a tourist activity in the Buteni area; check local conditions before making plans.
