Hotels and Getting Around in Șagu

The “Cabana Deltei” Hotel-Restaurant is located on DN 69 at the entrance to the village, on the left-hand side when travelling from Arad to Timișoara. DN 69 is the main transport link through Șagu commune and connects it with Arad and Timișoara. At the local level, DJ 682 G connects Șagu with Cruceni and continues via DJ 682 A towards Firiteaz. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish between them: DN 69 describes the commune-wide connection to Arad and Timișoara, while DJ 682 G and DJ 682 A provide the links to Cruceni and Firiteaz. The villages in the commune are located in the Câmpia Vingăi, part of the Câmpia Tisei.

Churches and Settlement History

Following the German colonization of 1770, the settlement of Șagu experienced renewed growth. As part of its redevelopment, a new Catholic church was built in the centre. The first Orthodox church in Șagu was built on the ruins of a medieval Catholic church. In this way, the historical connections extend from settlement development after 1770 to a medieval past. The Orthodox church was consecrated on 14 October 1994 by Patriarch Teoctist, together with Nicolae, Metropolitan of Banat, and Timotei, Archbishop of Arad. Between 1982 and 1986, Mihail Bălășescu painted frescoes on the walls of a church in Șagu.

Archaeological Sites

The Șagu-Sit A1_1 archaeological site lies on the first terrace of a former riverbed or former branch of the Mureș. It is located 200 metres south of the midpoint between Șagu and Cruceni, on the road connecting the two villages. Preventive excavations in 2010 covered almost three hectares and uncovered evidence from the first phase of the Late Bronze Age. This site is therefore defined by two aspects: its location in relation to the Mureș and the two villages, and its prehistoric dating.

The Șagu-Vest site is associated with two location references: it lies 1.23 kilometres northwest of the Orthodox church in Șagu and 420 metres southeast of the left slope of the Valea Viilor stream. These reference points differ both in direction and distance and help pinpoint the site's location.
