Ghioroc between the lake and tramway history
Accommodation in Ghioroc
Ghioroc combines a lake at the foot of the Zărand Mountains with a history shaped by winegrowing and electric rail transport. This gives you several specific themes to focus on when planning your trip: time by the water, a marked hiking trail, and the cultural history of winemaking and public transport. When looking for a hotel in Ghioroc, you can choose the town based on which of these aspects you would most like to shape your stay.
Ghioroc Lake: beach and fishing
Ghioroc Lake lies at the foot of the Zărand Mountains, covers 66 hectares, and is up to 10 meters deep. The beach features sand, palm trees, beach beds with canopies, and swan-shaped pedal boats. Along with its size, this gives the lake a distinct beach character. As beach conditions may change, check the facilities before your visit.
Fishing is permitted across the entire lake year-round, except during the legally mandated closed season. Before fishing, check the regulations in force and the closed season for your visit date. This ensures the exception is part of your planning rather than being overlooked in the general information about year-round fishing.
Ghioroc–Valea Cladovei hiking trail
The Ghioroc–Valea Cladovei hiking trail is marked in blue, is 6.8 kilometers long, is rated easy, and is accessible year-round. The hike takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. This is a named route with a specific, though approximate, time estimate. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out.
Winegrowing and electric tramway history
The Muzeul Viei și al Vinului is located on the grounds of the Viticultural Research Station in Ghioroc. It presents the history of winegrowing and winemaking in the Miniș-Măderat wine region. The museum is one of the local attractions along the Drumul Vinului. Its theme thus combines a specific focus on winegrowing and production with the region’s winegrowing history.
Another key aspect of the town’s history is electric rail transport. The first electrified tram line in Eastern Europe—and the eighth in the world—was inaugurated in Ghioroc. The Electric Tram Museum houses a collection of electric cars from the 19th and 20th centuries. It was established in Ghioroc because, then as now, the town holds an important position in the public transport system.
The Săgeata Verde made its first journey on December 1, 1906. The old electric train of the Podgorie ran as far as Ghioroc and is known as the Săgeata Verde.
Another historical landmark
The Orthodox Church of „Sfântul Mucenic Dimitrie“ in Ghioroc dates back to 1793. These dates mark different historical milestones: 1793 for the church and 1906 for the Săgeata Verde’s first journey; the tram museum’s collection includes cars from two centuries. In this way, architectural history, winegrowing, and transport stand alongside one another as distinct cultural themes.
