In Tromsø, exhibitions on the Arctic environment and culture sit alongside places for birdwatching, trails and activities by the water. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether you would like to spend more time on museums and city tours, seasonal nature experiences or activities further afield. The seasons and the different locations can also help you decide which priorities suit you.

Museums, city tours and Arctic themes

Guided walks through the city centre introduce its history, architecture and city life. Sightseeing tours by bus, car or another means of transport can show you more in less time or include places outside the centre. Some tours combine sightseeing with tastings of local flavours and stories about Tromsø’s food and drink culture. Offers and routes may change, so check the details of the specific tour in advance.

Polaria combines educational programmes and exhibitions on environmental protection, research-based knowledge and the protection of Arctic wildlife. Visitors can also see bearded seals up close there. There are good bus connections from the city centre, Giæverbukta and UNN; check current services before travelling.

The Science Centre of Northern Norway covers four main themes across three floors. Norway’s largest planetarium is also located there. Those interested in the history and nature of Northern Norway will find relevant exhibitions at the Arctic University Museum of Norway, also known as Tromsø Museum; individual exhibitions may change. The Troll Museum is devoted entirely to trolls and fairy tales. The different themes make it possible to combine museum visits with walks around the city, rather than focusing the day on a single subject.

Birdlife, swimming spots and activities by the water

Prestvannet is a landscape protection area with abundant birdlife in summer. A circular path runs around the lake; there are also fire pits and benches. In winter, an ice-skating rink is available when the ice is safe. This makes it a place for both observing nature and walking by the lake, as well as a seasonal activity whose use depends on ice conditions.

Langvannet has an accessible bathing area with a beach; swimming conditions are seasonal. At Rundvannet, a jetty offers the chance to practise fly fishing and go canoeing. Steinsvika has a sandy beach with views of Håja and the midnight sun, as well as designated fire pits. Local rules apply to fires. Grøtfjord offers good conditions for surfing and paddling, although the weather is a key factor. These locations therefore offer different ways to enjoy the water, and each should be planned with the season and specific conditions in mind.

Trails, views and experiences further afield

The cross-country ski trail network in Tromsø Municipality covers more than 400 kilometres; grooming is seasonal. In and around Lakselvbukt, a network of hiking trails includes boardwalks, bridges and other infrastructure. The trails are marked and signposted according to the national marking standard. Conditions and maintenance may change, so it is a good idea to check the current conditions before setting out on a hike.

The Fjellheisen cable car offers panoramic views of Tromsø, the surrounding islands, fjords, mountains and sea. Close to the destination, Fjellheisen is also a starting point for trips to mountains such as Fløya and Tromsdalstinden. When weather conditions are suitable, it is dark enough and aurora activity is present, you can see the Northern Lights from many places in the Tromsø region, and sometimes even from the city centre. Seeing them depends on these conditions and cannot be expected every night.

When choosing a hotel for your stay, plan around the experiences that interest you most: city tours and museums, natural spots such as Prestvannet or activities further afield. This will help you choose a suitable base for your trip to Tromsø without combining the different locations and activities into a single itinerary.
