Vikran: Rystraumen, Fishing and Sámi Culture
Accommodation in Vikran
In Vikran, Troll Havn’s longer programs, Sámi cultural experiences, and fishing opportunities come together. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: experiences in a fjord and mountain landscape, fishing, or other offerings in the wider Tromsø destination.
Vikran on Rystraumen
The Vikran Vacation tourism center is located on Rystraumen, a strait on the south side of Kvaløya. There, the tidal current can reach up to 8 knots and bring in large quantities of fish. “Up to” indicates a possible maximum, not a constant speed. The tides and sea are among the distinctive features of this landscape.
Programs and Sámi Culture
Troll Havn’s longer visitor programs in Vikran combine a fjord and mountain landscape with storytelling around the fire, cultural elements, and outdoor activities. One specific example is Sacred North: the eight-hour program is led by a practicing Sámi shaman in a fjord and mountain landscape.
Troll Havn’s Gathering Lodge serves as a space for workshops, ceremonies, storytelling, amulet-making, culinary tastings, and Sámi cultural experiences. Which individual programs are available may vary. Some Troll Havn experiences take place outdoors and in natural terrain; a moderate level of physical fitness is required for some activities.
Full-day and weekend programs include a hot meal made with local and seasonal ingredients. Vegetarian options are available. Transfers from Tromsø are included in the price for all Troll Havn programs. Transfer arrangements may change, so check this information before booking.
Fishing in Different Seasons
Fishing is possible year-round in Vikran, including in winter. Cod, wolffish, and halibut can be caught about 100 meters from Vikran. Catches and local conditions vary; actual fishing conditions depend on the season and weather. These limitations are just as important to consider when planning as the possibility of fishing in winter.
Tromsø in the Wider Destination
The wider Tromsø destination offers additional themes. Polaria provides educational programs and exhibitions on environmental protection, research-based knowledge, and the protection of Arctic wildlife. There are good bus connections from the city center, Giæverbukta, and UNN. Bus services may change, so check the current schedule before setting out.
Another nature spot in Tromsø is Prestvannet, a protected landscape area with a rich variety of birdlife in summer. A path circles the lake, where there are fire pits and benches. In winter, there is an ice-skating rink when the ice is safe. The themes are distinct: Vikran focuses on Troll Havn, fishing, and the fjord and mountain landscape, while Prestvannet and Polaria offer their own points of interest in the wider Tromsø destination.
