Vengsøy – Island Nature and Hiking
Accommodation in Vengsøy
The rocky island of Vengsøya lies northeast of Kvaløya. Its mountain range runs from northwest to southeast. You can choose from several activities when planning your visit: hike along the ridge, take the trail to Hundbergtinden, cycle along the paved road or make a trip to the coast.
Mountain Range, Summit and Coast
At 764 m above sea level, Vengsøytinden is the highest mountain on Vengsøya. From the summit of Hundbergtinden, you can see out across the open sea and northward. Rekvika lies at the outer end of the island. There you’ll find a very large beach where the afternoon sun shines for a long time.
The island’s cultural history is also worth exploring: Sandnes on Vengsøya has automatically protected cultural heritage sites. These include the remains of hut foundations and a burial ground.
Hikes and Trails on Vengsøya
The marked Vengsøytraversen route follows much of the mountain ridge. Allow about 5 to 7 hours for the hike. It includes exposed sections and some scrambling. Weather can affect conditions and difficulty; check the latest situation before setting out.
Guided tours on the Vengsøytraversen are limited to a maximum of four customers. As group policies may change, check the latest information with the provider if you are planning a guided tour.
The route to Hundbergtinden is about 2 km each way and crosses easy terrain. It is considered suitable for families. From the ferry quay, the trailhead is about 1 km north along the paved road, at the end of the road. As local conditions and signage may change, check your bearings on site.
Cyclists can also use the approximately 7 km paved road, which can be ridden in full or in part over easy terrain. If you don’t want to cover the whole route, you can choose how much of it to ride.
Accommodation and Trip Planning
Vengsøy Rorbuer is right on the shore of Vengsøya, with the sea and mountains directly beside the accommodation. If location is important to your choice, you can take this specific proximity to the coast into account.
