Kleppe brings together a range of local highlights for a stay: the local history museum at Haugabakka, Kleppevarden with its sweeping views across Jæren, and Kleppelunden as a local recreation area. Those interested in history will find tangible links to the former school and farming community at the old Jær house. For time outdoors, the circular trail, paths in Kleppelunden and the bandstand each offer a different starting point.

Kleppevarden: Trail, monument and views

The “Kleppevarden rundt” circular trail passes the local history museum at Haugabakka early on. It follows a path to Kleppe and goes uphill through a residential area to Kleppevarden. You can park for the circular trail in the car park by Kleppe kirke. This makes it possible to combine local history with a route that passes the museum and climbs up to the viewpoint.

A monument commemorating a 1,000-year anniversary stands on Kleppevarden. Kleppevarden has also been designated a Millennium Site in Klepp. From here, there are sweeping views across Jæren; on a clear day, you can see most of Klepp municipality. The view is therefore dependent on visibility conditions.

Haugabakka: School history and museum

The old Jær house at Haugabakka is Klepp’s local history museum. It was built in 1852 or 1853 as a schoolhouse and teacher’s residence, and was the first schoolhouse in Klepp. Visitors can see many interesting tools and other objects from the farming community of more than a hundred years ago. The collection offers a glimpse into farming life at the time.

Haugabakka has a local history collection and rooms for temporary exhibitions. The complex consists of the old schoolhouse and the Folgehuset building. The latter is used for art exhibitions, meetings and cultural evenings. Guided tours for groups are available on request; arrange this before your visit.

Kleppelunden: Paths and outdoor recreation in green surroundings

Kleppelunden is an easily accessible recreation area and is also accessible by wheelchair. Facilities include wide gravel paths, benches, a playground and barbecue areas. The extensive network of paths also includes a lit path suitable for walking and cycling. This gives you several ways to spend time in the area, with paths and facilities that each offer something different.

Kleppe kirke and getting there

There has been a church at the site of Klepp kirke since the Middle Ages, possibly as early as the 11th century. The present building was consecrated on 4 October 1846. Klepp kirke is a timber-framed long church and is said to have 280 seats today. The different dates provide context for the site and the present-day church building.
