Rogaland offers practical starting points for a range of travel interests: coastal hikes, fjord landscapes and cultural attractions. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which places and activities you want to shape your trip. The routes vary considerably in length and time required.

Coastal and fjord landscapes

Ă…rosĂĄsen is a 178-metre-high peak right by the sea in southern Rogaland. The landscape around the Lysefjord is also marked by considerable changes in elevation: along long stretches, the mountains rise more than 1,000 metres above sea level. The fjord extends 42 kilometres inland.

The Månafossen waterfall is one of Rogaland’s biggest tourist attractions. It is located in the Frafjordheiane Landscape Conservation Area, which covers more than 400 square kilometres. A peak by the sea, steep fjord mountains and a waterfall in a large protected area offer different landscape highlights for a trip through Rogaland.

Hikes by distance and time required

Allow about six hours for the return hike to Kjerag; the route is approximately 11 kilometres long. The hike to the mountain lodge at Ritlandskrateret starts in Kleivaland in Vormedalen. It takes about two hours, is around 3.5 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 370 metres. The Kjerag hike therefore takes considerably longer than the route to the mountain lodge at Ritlandskrateret.

The Sirevåg–Brusand route is about 15 kilometres long and passes through varied coastal scenery. A shorter option is the Holane loop on Fosen: it is approximately 4 kilometres long and takes about two hours at a leisurely pace. The Vassøyturen is a similar length at 4.3 kilometres; this loop through gently rolling coastal terrain is also estimated to take about two hours at a leisurely pace. The routes differ not only in length but also in scenery. Conditions on the routes may vary.

Getting to beaches and trailheads

SirevĂĄg, Ogna and Brusand are accessible by train; the beaches are just a few minutes from the stations. If you include these places in your travel plans, check the current timetable before setting off.

Culture and history

The Viking Farm at Avaldsnes on the island of Bukkøy shows how ordinary people lived during the Viking Age. The Sverd i fjell monument, also called Swords in Rock, stands by the Hafrsfjord; it symbolises the unification of Norway. On Rogaland’s official cultural portal, you can filter cultural heritage sites by type, municipality or theme. This can help you choose cultural destinations if you want to narrow down your interests in advance.

A taste of Hjelmeland

In Hjelmeland, visitors can sample award-winning cider, cheese and salmon. Check availability and tasting arrangements before your trip. Along with the coastal trails, hikes and cultural attractions, the food and drink on offer adds another dimension to planning a trip in Rogaland.
