Gjesdal: Mountain scenery, waterfall and farm history
Accommodation in Gjesdal
Gjesdal combines mountain scenery, a waterfall and farm history. The Frafjordheiane Landscape Protection Area covers large parts of Gjesdal’s mountain regions. Other highlights include the brackish-water delta at Frafjord, historic farms and marked trails. These varied themes offer something to explore during your stay, whether you are interested in nature, culture or leisure.
Mountains, waterfall and bird area
At 92 metres high, Månafossen is one of Rogaland’s biggest tourist attractions. Waterbirds find an important feeding area in the brackish-water delta at Frafjord. Together with the mountain regions in the landscape protection area, these places reveal different aspects of Gjesdal’s landscape: from protected mountain country to the waterfall and the delta.
Farm history and wool processing
The Limagarden farm has been in existence since 1600; sheep have always been one of its most important sources of income. On the house’s second floor, a small exhibition features numerous tools used in wool processing. A marked hiking trail connects Limagarden with the Fodnabergheiå farmstead. In this way, farm history, wool processing and a trail between two farmsteads come together. Byrkjedal Ysteri is also part of the history of local food production: it was founded in 1925, and goat cheese was the main product made here.
Hiking trails and day-use cabins
A historic route runs from Eikeskog via Månafossen and the Mån farm to Rundavatnet. Today, a popular hiking trail follows this route through Fidjadalen. The Fisketjørnbu day-use cabin is located in Madlandsheia, by Indra Fisketjørn. A marked trail to the cabin is 2.2 kilometres long (one way). At Øygardsvatnet, the Røyskatten cabin is open to everyone. From the car park at Øygardsvatnet, a 1.8-kilometre universally designed trail leads to the cabin.
Leisure and railway history in Ålgård
Kongeparken opened in Ålgård in 1986 and offers more than 60 attractions, activities and shows. The offerings may change as the park develops; check the latest information before visiting. Ålgård’s railway history also includes the station building and locomotive shed, both of which are of cultural heritage value. In Ålgård, leisure activities and railway history come together.
Places to stay in the area
Friluftsgården Mån has accommodation spaces available for rent. The heated common room features an exhibition about the mountain farm, Frafjordheiane and the network of trails in the valley. Check the booking arrangements before your trip. The buildings at Byrkjedalstunet are now used, among other things, for accommodation, a restaurant and a shop. As availability may change, check current operations before travelling. You can include these specific accommodation options in your plans alongside Gjesdal’s nature, farm and cultural attractions.
