Ålgård offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: public art in the town centre, four short marked local walks, hikes to Kodlifjell and Håfjellet, and Kongeparken. The old church and nearby Limagarden add to the picture of local and regional history.

Art and Local History

Ålgård’s old church is in the town centre. It is a long church, was built in 1917 and has room for 253 people.

The public artwork “Ålgård Teppe” by the artist duo Løvass and Wagle adorns the new marketplace. Made of bricks, it is integrated into the paving. Its patterns draw on textile designs from the former DFU textile factory, incorporating the factory’s former design motifs into the layout of the square.

Another public art installation extends across several sections of the town centre. Liv Godin brua is a pedestrian bridge over the Figgjo River. The art project extends across the bridge and riverside path to the area around Veveriet. The riverside artwork connects the bridge with Veveriet and offers those walking between the two places a special art experience. Unlike “Ålgård Teppe”, which is integrated into the paving, this project follows a path along the river.

Local Walks and Trails

Four short local walks have been established in Ålgård in collaboration with Stavanger Turistforening. The trails are marked with the association’s red T markers, giving them a consistent waymarking system.

One route with a specified distance runs 1.8 kilometres from Ålgård sentrum to the Røyskatten day-trip cabin at Øygardsvatnet. The cabin is open to everyone. The route can be followed on footpaths and cycle paths, which are also suitable for bicycles, prams and wheelchairs.

For the hike to Kodlifjell, you can start at Gjesdal idrettspark or in the Kodlidalen residential area. Depending on the route you choose, the ascent to the summit is 1 to 2 kilometres. There are large parking areas at the sports park and in Kodlidalen.

Trails to Håfjellet start from several locations: Gjesdal idrettspark, Kodlidalen, Fiskebekkdalen, near Limagarden, from Kvernhuset on Limavegen, or from the Hunnedalsvegen/Limavegen junction. Parking is available at all the starting points. Depending on the route you choose, the ascent to the summit is 2.5 to 3 kilometres. Compared with Kodlifjell, more starting points are listed here and the stated routes to the summit are longer.

Kongeparken and Limagarden

Kongeparken opened in Ålgård in 1986. Today, it is the largest amusement park in southwestern Norway and one of the region’s leading family attractions. It offers more than 60 attractions, activities and shows for visitors of all ages. The exact number may change, so check the current offerings before your visit.

Nearby, 2 kilometres south of Ålgård town centre, Limagarden is located on National Road 45 towards Hunnedalen. The site comprises six buildings housing the Gjesdal Bygdemuseum collection, where visitors can experience Gjesdal’s past culture in its original setting. The house’s second floor also has a small exhibition featuring numerous tools for processing wool.

In the wider destination of Gjesdal, the Limagarden farm has existed since 1600. Sheep have always been one of its main sources of income. The wider destination also has other natural attractions: Frafjordheiane Landscape Protection Area covers large parts of Gjesdal’s mountain areas. Månafossen is a 92-metre-high waterfall and one of Rogaland’s major tourist attractions.
