Sokndal: Rock Art, Trails and History
Accommodation in Sokndal
The rock art site at Haneberg includes at least two ships and several cup marks. It dates from the Bronze Age, between 1800 and 500 BCE. Sokndal combines this ancient heritage with historic trading places, geological features, and opportunities for hiking, cycling, and kayaking.
History and Geological Features
Sogndalstrand was known as a trading place from 1660; in 1798, it was officially granted the rights of a ladested (a port of call). The Sogndalstrand Museum features exhibits on local history and maritime culture. The Blåfjell mines were in operation from 1863 to 1876. Sokndal Church was built in 1803 in the Louis XVI style.
Sokndal is one of five municipalities that are members of the Magma UNESCO Global Geopark. Ruggesteinen was granted the status of Norway’s first geological nature reserve in 1923. Another geological feature is Nesvåghålo: this rock formation, made up of so-called potholes, was formed by flowing water beneath a melting glacier.
Helleren comprises two houses dating from the late 18th or early 19th century and is an ancient settlement site. The houses beneath Helleren are located on Riksvei 44 between Egersund and Flekkefjord, are visible from the road, and can be reached via a turnoff from Fv. 44 at the bottom of the valley. Check road conditions and stopping options before setting out.
Hiking and Cycling Routes
Nordsjøløypa is a marked hiking trail between Jøssingfjord and Sogndalstrand. A 3.6 km gravel walking and cycling path runs through Blåfjelldalen. Another route follows a former railway line: the stretch from Blåfjell to Rekefjord is now a hiking and cycling path.
On Oddsfjellet, a marked hiking trail leads to the grave of the Viking Orvar Odd. The trail also offers views of the North Sea; visibility depends on the weather. There are various cycling options, too: Sokndal’s roads have little traffic and are well suited to cycling, although traffic conditions can vary. Several locations in Sokndal are suitable for mountain biking or have been developed for it.
Kayaking and Motorsport
You can kayak along the Sokna to Sogndalstrand; equipment is available to rent or borrow. Check whether equipment is available for your dates before your trip. Sogndalstrand Havrafting & Frilu also offers sea kayaking and fishing trips at various locations in Sokndal. Dates and availability may change, so it is worth checking before making plans.
Motorcenter Norway in Kroheia, Sokndal, offers rides on a racetrack and an off-road course. It can be booked for races, training, motorsport enthusiast gatherings, team building, and other events. Booking categories may change; confirm specific plans with the operator.
