Åna-Sira brings together marked hiking trails and a landscape whose rock formations tell a long story. There are also traces of past human activity and a historic village centre. These different themes give you concrete ideas for planning your time here around your own interests.

Brufjell and the geology of Åna-Sira

Brufjell rises 184 metres above sea level in Åna-Sira and offers views of Listalandet. A marked trail leads from the summit down to Brufjellhålene. These lie on a plateau about 20 metres above sea level. The formations are more than just a destination along the trail: they were created by sustained wave action during the Tapes period, around 8,000 to 4,000 years ago. This makes it possible to consider the present-day landscape and its geological history together. Trail conditions and seasonal safety restrictions may change; check them before your hike.

Visitors to Åna-Sira can explore one of 26 marked hiking trails. The trail to Brufjellhålene offers a specific destination at Brufjell, while the number of marked trails points to the wider range of hiking options. This distinction is useful when planning: you can focus on a hike with a named destination or start by looking at the selection of trails.

Other places in Åna-Sira also reveal different geological features. Sandvika is notable for its wide variety of rock types. At Smellerglova, different rocks create a unique play of colours. Together with Brufjellhålene, these places offer several perspectives on geology: the effects of waves over long periods, as well as differences in rock types and colour.

Local history and activities

Åna-Sira Church was built in 1888 as a wooden long church. Ponds in Åna-Sira were created for ice production in the early 19th century. A historical walk takes you to the old salmon ladders. These stops represent different aspects of local history: church construction, past ice production and the history of the salmon ladders. If you would like to include historical themes in your trip planning alongside hiking, they offer concrete points of interest.

Another activity is disc golf. The course in Åna-Sira is located by the Åna-Sira power station and has nine holes. It is a little more challenging than the course in Sokndal; several holes require greater precision and control. This activity differs from the hiking trails not only in what you do, but also in the level of challenge described. The comparison can be useful if you want to include both trail activities and disc golf in your plans.

Sokndal in the regional context

The wider destination of Sokndal offers other distinct themes related to geology and history. Sokndal is one of five municipalities that are members of the Magma UNESCO Global Geopark. The rock art site at Haneberg in Sokndal includes at least two ships and several cup marks; it is dated to the Bronze Age, from 1800 to 500 BC. Sogndalstrand also has its own history: it was known as a trading post from 1660 and was officially granted the rights of a ladested (a coastal trading town) in 1798. These examples add regional context, while the trails, rock formations and historical sites described above are in Åna-Sira.
