Klepp combines cultural history with landscapes and event venues. Haugabakka is home to an old schoolhouse and Folgehuset, Kleppelunden has a music pavilion, and Kleppevarden offers views of Jæren. The wider destination of Klepp also offers more nature and history, from wetlands and sandy beaches to medieval traces.

School History and Culture at Haugabakka

At Haugabakka, an old schoolhouse houses a collection of local artefacts. The old Jæren farmhouse there is Klepp's local heritage museum. Built in 1852/1853 as a schoolhouse and teacher's residence, it was the first schoolhouse in Klepp. The local history collection also includes numerous tools and other items from rural society more than a hundred years ago. The history of schooling and records of everyday farming life offer visitors different historical perspectives.

Haugabakka is also home to Folgehuset. It is used for art exhibitions, meetings and cultural evenings. This means the collection in the old schoolhouse and the cultural activities at Folgehuset sit side by side at this location, with themes ranging from regional history to art and community events.

Kleppelunden and Kleppevarden

The music pavilion in Kleppelunden is used for concerts, meetings and other events. Kleppelunden is accessible to wheelchair users. The accessibility statement refers to the park; the events mentioned take place in the music pavilion.

Kleppevarden was designated a Millennium site in Klepp. It offers impressive views of Jæren. The viewpoint thus adds a landscape perspective to the cultural sites, without requiring a particular event as the reason for a visit.

Klepp as a Whole: Landscapes, Nature and History

Across the wider destination of Klepp, the landscape is shaped by rolling farmland, a mild coastal climate, shallow lakes and long sandy beaches. Borestranda is a protected landscape and one of the country's longest sandy dune beaches. Orrevatnet is a nature reserve and part of the Jæren Wetlands System, Ramsar Site 309. It is internationally important as a resting, wintering and breeding area for wetland birds.

The Revtangen Ornithological Station also focuses on natural history. Founded in 1937, it is run by the Stavanger Museum and is considered the oldest bird station in the Nordic countries. Around 6,000 to 10,000 birds are caught and ringed there each year; the number may vary. The station and Orrevatnet thus represent different aspects of birdlife: ringing at the station and the wetland's importance for resting, wintering and breeding.

Historic Sites and Planning Your Visit

During the Migration Period, Krosshaug was one of the largest and richest burial grounds on Jæren. A stone cross was erected there around the year 1000. The old church of Orre also offers a glimpse into history: dating from the mid-13th century, it is built of brick and wood and is considered the oldest building in the area.

The old church of Orre is closed, but can be opened for visits by prior arrangement. Be sure to arrange your visit in advance. At Helleberget, which lies partly in Klepp, there is a car park and information boards. Another historical trace is the find at Stangelandshelleren: the bones of a bull discovered there are evidence of Norway's oldest domestic animal.

The Kleppevarden rundt circular walk passes through the western parts of Klepp. In clear weather, its summit offers views across most of the municipality. The weather is a key factor for these views; also check route conditions before setting out.
