Sutorina can be explored through three distinct themes: the monuments in the memorial park, historic churches and an old stone bridge over the Sutorina River. Together, they take you from military-history commemorations to specific construction dates and the dimensions of a structure. Visitors can consider these historical aspects separately; the information ranges from a probable period of construction to specified construction and restoration years.

Memorial Park and Military History

Sutorina’s memorial park brings together monuments to local and regional military history. They commemorate resistance to Napoleon’s army, the uprising in Herzegovina led by Duke Luka Vukalović, the National Liberation War, the 1991–1995 war, the Balkan Wars and the First World War. The themes thus span uprisings and resistance as well as several wars of the 20th century.

A report dated July 3, 2026, describes the memorial park, following improvements, as fenced and illuminated; it also mentions concrete paths, benches, a small sports field, a playground, flowers and a drinking fountain. The listed features complement the monuments with places to sit, as well as sports and play facilities within the park.

Churches and the Old Stone Bridge

The Church of St. Stephen in Sutorina (Šćepanovići) is dated to the 17th to 18th centuries. The Church of St. George in Sutorina (Ćenič) dates to 1650 and was restored in 1875. The place names in parentheses help distinguish the two churches. Their dates also differ: one is assigned a period, while the other has a construction year and a later restoration.

The old stone bridge over the Sutorina River complements the churches with a structure whose dimensions can be measured. A cultural-historical account from 2024 gives its length as 29 meters, its width as 2.60 to 3.00 meters, and the number of arches as two. Its probable construction period is 1807 to 1809, during the French administration of Boka. These specific measurements are thus paired with a historical attribution that remains explicitly probable.

More perspectives in the wider destination of Herceg-Novi

Within the wider destination of Herceg-Novi, Orjen Nature Park is a distinct attraction. It lies in the hinterland of Herceg Novi, on Mount Orjen, and was granted protected status primarily because of its many endemic plant species, including the munika pine. Its dense network of marked trails ranges from easy walking paths to routes for experienced mountaineers. The park is connected by the Herceg Novi–Trebinje road; from the center of Herceg Novi, it can be reached on foot via a marked trail in less than two hours.

Two trails offer different points of reference when choosing a route. The Herceg Novi–Kameno–Borići–“Za Vratlom” mountain hut trail connects Herceg Novi with Orjen and serves as an access route to the Orjen–Lovćen–Rumija national long-distance trail. The Tatar bašta–Sušćepan–Ratiševina–Mokrine trail connects villages in the hinterland and churches with viewpoints, and is suitable for walking and easy hiking. The first trail is characterized by its connection to the long-distance route; the second by its links between villages, churches and viewpoints, and by the walking activities mentioned.

Herceg-Novi’s architectural history offers its own highlights. Kanli Kula is a monumental fortress in the old town of Herceg Novi, built by the Ottomans in 1539. The clock tower of Herceg Novi was built in 1667 at the order of Sultan Mahmud and forms the entrance to the old town. Forte Mare stands directly on the coast and guarded the town’s access from the sea. From Forte Mare fortress, views extend to the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, the town harbor, Igalo and the old town.
