Žanjica is a bay nestled between ancient olive groves and lush vegetation. The beach is made up of white pebbles and is protected from strong waves by Cape Arza. Its shoreline is more than 300 metres long and up to 15 metres wide. The beach and landscape give a stay here a distinctly coastal focus.

The Bay, Beach and Surroundings

For orientation in the surrounding area: Mirište lies between Žanjica and Cape Arza. The Vavedenje monastery and church complex is located on the island of Žanjic, also known as Mala Gospa. This makes it possible to distinguish the bay, the settlement in between and the island as separate features of the coastal landscape.

Summer Boat Connection and Dining by the Pier

In summer, Žanjica can be reached by a regularly scheduled boat service that runs several times a day. Other boats also operate, carrying excursion visitors. If you are planning a specific departure, check the latest times before travelling. Restaurants are located next to the small pier. They serve typical Mediterranean cuisine and some continental Montenegrin specialities.

Church and Excursion Destinations

The Church of Saint John stands beside Žanjica beach. The present-day church dates to 1881 and was built on the ruins of an earlier church. On the Luštica peninsula, the Blue Cave is another excursion highlight: small boats can enter, and swimming there is considered a special experience. Boat trips for this excursion are seasonal and depend on the operators. Check availability accordingly for your travel dates.

More Ways to Explore the Wider Destination of Herceg-Novi

The wider destination of Herceg-Novi offers different experiences in addition to the coastal scenery of Žanjica. Orjen Nature Park is in the hinterland of Herceg Novi, on Mount Orjen. Its dense network of marked trails ranges from easy walking paths to routes for experienced mountaineers. The park can be reached on foot from the centre of Herceg Novi in less than two hours via a marked trail; it is also connected by the Herceg Novi–Trebinje road.

One specific hiking option is the trail to Veliki Kabao, at 1,894 metres. It is considered one of the most attractive and less difficult routes on Orjen, as well as Montenegro’s oldest purpose-built hiking trail. So, in the wider destination, marked trails and mountain scenery are available as distinct travel interests alongside a coastal stay.

For a city and culture perspective, Herceg Novi offers other landmarks: Kanli Kula Fortress is in the old town and was built by the Ottomans in 1539. Herceg Novi’s Clock Tower was built in 1667 by order of Sultan Mahmud and forms the entrance to the old town. These historic sites offer a different focus from the beach and vegetation of Žanjica.

The Mimosa Festival is a traditional event in Herceg Novi, established in 1969. In February and March, the programme includes masked balls, carnival events, concerts, and numerous children’s, arts and sports programmes. If you are looking for a hotel in Žanjica, you can first consider whether you want your stay to focus on the beach and summer boat connection, or also on the hiking and cultural experiences of the wider destination of Herceg-Novi. Then compare specific offers based on your own requirements.
