For a trip to Mordanga, the lake landscape, water system and mill history offer different points of reference. If you are looking for a hotel in Mordanga, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip: the landscape of Lake Mordangas-Kāņu, the lakes in their wider surroundings, or the historic traces of the glass factory and mill.

Lake Landscape

The collective name Lake Mordangas-Kāņu encompasses Lake Mordangas and the connected Mežezers (Lake Kāņu). Lake Mordangas covers 45 hectares and is 2 kilometres long; its maximum width is approximately 0.4 kilometres. High banks and wooded inland dunes characterize the Mordangas Lakes. Lake Mordangas-Kāņu formed in the depressions of ancient valleys. The collective name should therefore be distinguished from the measurement for Lake Mordangas itself: it also includes the connected Mežezers, while the area, length and maximum width describe Lake Mordangas. Its formation in ancient valley depressions adds a geological context to the landscape’s measurements.

Waterways in the Wider Region

In the wider region, the Mordangas Lakes form a lake group in the Ugāle Plain of the Kurzeme Lowland and lie in the Irbe and Venta drainage basins. The group is oriented roughly north–south and is divided into two parts by a watershed. The northern group drains towards Lake Usma and into the Irbe drainage basin, while the southern group drains towards the Abava. The Kāņupe flows from Lake Mordangas to Lake Usma. The drainage basins and watershed describe different spatial levels: Irbe and Venta place the lake group in its regional context, while the watershed separates northern and southern drainage. The group’s approximate north–south orientation adds a sense of its alignment to this hydrological context. Inland dunes and high banks describe visible landscape features, whereas drainage basins and the watershed explain how the waterways are organized regionally.

The Mill and Local History

The history of the mill can be distinguished chronologically from that of the glass factory. A glass factory was established in Mordanga in 1868. The building of the Mordangas Mill was constructed in the early 20th century; the mill has been out of operation since 1960. The millpond of the Mordanga Mill covers approximately 2 hectares. The Kāņupe flows from it and is 14 kilometres long. By comparison, Lake Mordangas is considerably larger at 45 hectares; the two measurements refer to different lakes. When looking at the local history, two dates should therefore be kept separate: 1868 marks the founding of the glass factory, while the construction period and closure refer to the Mordangas Mill.

Hiking and Route Context

During a hike in the area around Mordanga on 14 October 2025, several swampy paths were walked. A historic tourist route description lists the route Talsi–Pastende–Ģibuļi–Mordanga–Spāre–Usma. The two nature-related references differ in time and place: the hike describes a specific walk along swampy paths in the Mordanga area on 14 October 2025, while the route places Mordanga within a longer regional itinerary.
