Mērsrags: Coast, harbour and cultural history
Accommodation in Mērsrags
Mērsrags lies in the Engures ezera dabas parks Nature Park. The Engures–Mērsraga Canal, dug in 1842, runs through the village. The harbour and canal lend the coastal landscape a maritime character; nearby, the beach, walks and birdwatching offer other attractions. There are also cultural sites with a long architectural and local history.
Harbour, canal and coast
The harbour of Mērsrags has a sheltered harbour area in an artificially created entrance between two breakwaters. The Yacht Club Kurland is located in the harbour. Its facilities include a fixed berth, modern lighting, and electricity and water connections. The service building includes a wastewater pumping station.
Nearby is Mērsraga pludmale, a several-kilometre-long sandy beach where swimming and sunbathing are possible. Walks along the beach and through the pine forest are also among the local activities. A wooden boardwalk built in 2018 leads from the car park to Mērsraga pludmale and marks the connection between these two points.
Church, lighthouse and museum
The Mērsraga Evanģēliski luteriskā baznīca is one of Latvia’s oldest wooden churches. Its present wooden building was erected in 1809 and completely rebuilt in 1896. The church contains several state-protected cultural monuments. These include J. F. Sartoris’s altarpiece “Christ with the Child,” J. Pipars’s 1793 painting “Jesus Saves the Drowning Peter,” an organ from the second half of the 19th century, and a chandelier from the end of the 19th century. The tower of the Mērsrags Lighthouse is also a state-listed monument of architectural importance.
A section of the exhibition at the Muzejs „Saieta nams“ is devoted to old Latvian writing, ownership and magical symbols. An extensive collection displays such symbols on tools and household objects. The museum is housed in a building erected in 1811, described as the oldest surviving residential building in Mērsrags. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; take this requirement into account when planning.
Coastal meadows and birdwatching
The birdwatching tower in Mērsrags offers wide views of coastal meadows and grasslands grazed by cattle. Mērsrags is considered an excellent place to observe waterbirds. Migratory birds, songbirds and birds of prey gather there. Birdwatching is an activity to enjoy throughout Mērsrags.
Velna akmens also offers a distinctive connection to the coastal landscape: the stone lies at Mērsraga zemes rags, about 50 metres from the shore. This means you can consider nature watching, the beach and individual landscape features as different interests to pursue during your stay.
At Zvejnieku sēta „NācSētā“, you can buy smoked fish. Check availability before you travel. Together, the harbour, beach, museum and nature watching make for a stay whose focus you can shape around the places you visit and your interests.
