Roja brings together a beach, river routes and maritime heritage. If you’re looking for a hotel in Roja, you can plan your trip around whether you’d like to focus on time on the coast, exploring marked routes or learning about the history of fishing and seafaring.

Coast and Promenade

Roja Beach is designated as a public beach and is a place for recreation and leisure, with white sand for people seeking peace, nature and the sea. Beach conditions can vary by season. The wooden promenade by the beach was extended in 2020, is more than 800 metres long and runs in the direction of Kolka. It is suitable for cyclists, pedestrians, strollers and people with functional impairments. As infrastructure can change over time, check the current condition of the promenade before your visit.

Rojas brīvdabas estrāde is a summer concert venue just a few steps from the sea and the public beach. The coast therefore offers both an open-air place for recreation and a venue with a cultural focus. The name “summer concert venue” describes the character of the stage; check specific event dates separately.

Walking Loops and Activities on the River

The nature trail along the River Roja offers three marked loops of 2, 7 and 15 kilometres. Yellow, blue and red markers distinguish the routes; all can be walked in either direction. The different route lengths give you a clear basis for comparing how long a loop you’d like, without tying your choice to a specific walking time.

There are also various ways to get out on the water on the River Roja: SPURA rents out SUP boards, kayaks, rowing boats and water bikes. This gives you several types of watercraft to choose from. Activities with SPURA may require advance arrangements, so take this into account when planning.

Seafaring, Fishing and Culture

The Rojas Marine Fisheries Museum displays fishing boats, anchors and a machine for sealing fish cans. One exhibition is devoted to Krišjānis Valdemārs, Roja’s seafaring school and sailing shipbuilding in the 19th century. Another covers the history of fish processing on the Roja coast from the 19th century to the present day. There is also an interactive exhibition about the Soviet era on the Roja coast. Together, these topics take you from seafaring and shipbuilding to fish processing and more recent history.

The Rojas Cultural Centre has an auditorium with 400 seats and an exhibition hall. The exhibition venue “Vai tu mīli jūru?” also includes a memorial room for Krišjānis Valdemārs. Alongside the maritime subjects covered by the museum, the town therefore has a cultural centre and a dedicated memorial room.

Park and Fish Feast for Groups

The “Plocis” Forest Park is in the centre of Roja, on Parka iela. Its facilities include walking paths, a play area with a three-metre-high climbing wall and swings, as well as fitness and exercise equipment. The park offers everything from walking paths to a range of exercise facilities.

For groups of 15 to 40 people, Hotel “Roja” and SIA “Pundiķi” offer the bookable programme “Mielasts Zvejnieku sētā”. It introduces visitors to the work of fishermen and includes local seafood. The fish feast is prepared over a fire and consists of fish soup, rye bread, smoked fish, beer and water from the Roja spring. Advance booking is required; check this condition if the group programme fits your travel plans.
