Spāre brings together Lake Gulbju, a circular trail through the forest and cultural heritage. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to plan a walking route, spend time by the water or explore historic buildings? At Lake Gulbju, the trail, fishing, boat traffic and swimming also each have their own conditions. The church and manor house offer distinct cultural points of interest alongside the natural surroundings.

Lake Gulbju and its trails

The LVM Spāre Tourism and Recreation Centre is located on the shore of Lake Gulbju. The lake is therefore the focal point for the circular trail and the water activities described here. This is useful to bear in mind when planning your trip: the trail, fishing, boat traffic and bathing jetty all relate to Lake Gulbju. This lets you consider different interests—exercise, fishing or swimming—at the same lake without treating them as the same activity.

The trail, approximately 7 kilometres long, runs around Lake Gulbju along a forest track and through the woods. It is easy to walk or cycle, and accessible with a pushchair. Conditions along the route may vary by season. Near Spāre, the route can also be shortened to just under 3 kilometres each way. The distinction between these distances is important: approximately 7 kilometres refers to the route around the lake, while just under 3 kilometres each way describes the shorter option. This helps you plan the distance you want to cover without treating the two options as circular routes of equal length.

Fishing, boat traffic and swimming

Fishing at Lake Gulbju requires a licence. Only boats belonging to the Spāre Tourism and Recreation Centre are allowed on the lake. Licensing rules and regulations governing use of the lake may change; if fishing or boating is important to your stay, check the current rules in advance. For swimming, Lake Gulbju has a pontoon jetty with steps. Check the conditions at the jetty before your visit as well.

Two lakes, different details

Lake Spāres ezers is in Ģibuļu parish and covers an area of 201.1 hectares. It should not be confused with Lake Gulbju: the circular trail, boat traffic and pontoon jetty relate to Lake Gulbju, while the area figure refers to Lake Spāres ezers. Because the names are similar, this distinction is useful when planning a visit to a specific lake.

Cultural heritage in Spāre

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Spāre is located in Spāre, in Ģibuļu parish, and is a cultural monument of national significance. Spāre Manor was built around 1790. These offer two distinct points of reference for a stay focused on cultural heritage. The church’s monument status indicates its classification as a cultural monument of national significance, while the manor’s approximate construction date places it in a specific historical period. For travellers interested in cultural heritage, these provide two different points of reference: monument status and a specific construction period.
