Upesgrīva brings together a narrow, sandy coast, maritime history, and cultural offerings. Its historical connections date back to the 1920s; the poetry performance is newly created every summer, while UMM offers private events year-round.

Coast and marine protected area

Upesgrīva’s beach is narrow and sandy, with boulders in the sea in some places. Sand and a few large stones are therefore equally part of the coastal landscape. Upesgrīva is also associated with the marine protected area “Rīgas līča rietumu piekraste”. The beach and the protected-area connection offer different perspectives on the landscape: one describes the coast’s physical form, while the other adds a marine protected area to its natural significance. If you want to take the landscape into account when planning your trip, you can consider these coastal features alongside the historical and cultural themes.

Shipbuilding and the history of the community house

Upesgrīva was once a shipbuilding center, and the three-masted sailing ship “Daina” was built there in 1924. Another historical milestone followed just one year later: the house that now contains the Upesgrīvas saieta nams community house was built in 1925. It was bequeathed to the municipal administration, fully renovated in 2013, and opened as a new community house on October 21, 2013. The years 1924 and 1925 point to different aspects of the area’s history—shipbuilding and a house that later became a community house. The renovation and opening mark a much later chapter in the building’s history. The maritime past and the history of the community house can therefore be considered as two distinct topics.

Music and summer poetry

At Vilsons’ Veranda “Rūķi,” music and poetry come together with a seasonal touch. The veranda is described as Latvia’s smallest concert hall and is located close to the sea. Visitors can enjoy classical and jazz music there, and poetry performances are also held. A new poetry performance is created every summer. This matters for trip planning: classical and jazz music describe the musical offerings, while the new poetry performance is specifically tied to summer. If you would like to include this particular performance in your stay, check the dates for your travel period. This lets you consider a potential cultural event separately from Upesgrīva’s historical connections.

The UMM experience and private events

The UMM experience includes a meal made with seasonal products from local home producers. It connects the experience to local production and the season. UMM offers private events for 6 to 25 guests year-round; in the cold season, the maximum is 20. For groups, the season therefore directly affects the stated limit: a private event in the cold season for more than 20 guests is outside this range. Outside the cold season, events for up to 25 guests are possible; the minimum is six. This information may be helpful if group size or a shared occasion is important to your travel plans.
