Talsi is a good choice for a stay if you would like to include cultural history, collections and places by the water in your trip. The historic centre is a cultural monument of national significance; other highlights include the Talsi Regional Museum, Talsi Hillfort and the promenade by Lake Talsi. If you are looking for a hotel in Talsi, choosing one that suits your travel interests can help: would you like to focus mainly on history and crafts, explore collections or make time for walks by the lake?

History and historic sites

The historic centre of Talsi is a cultural monument of national significance. Talsi Hillfort offers another historical perspective: it rises 32 metres above the water level of Lake Talsi. Around 4,000 artefacts have been found at the hillfort. The sites also differ in scale: the centre’s status as a cultural monument is its defining feature, while the hillfort is notable for its elevation and the approximate number of finds.

Museums and crafts

The Talsi Regional Museum is housed in the restored neoclassical residence of Baron von Fircks, built in Okte at the end of the 19th century. The museum presents history, art and nature. Guided tours are available through the museum and park, as well as around the city and Talsi District, in Latvian and foreign languages. If a guided tour is important to your plans, check the preferred language and date in advance.

The Latvian Agriculture Museum has a different collection focus, including steam traction engines, tractors, threshing machines, a collection of ploughs and motorcycles. While the Talsi Regional Museum presents history, art and nature, this collection features specific machines and vehicles. If you are choosing between the museums, you can base your decision on the subjects and objects that interest you most.

Tals’ keramik’s “Ciparnīca” pottery workshop offers a hands-on perspective. There, you can watch and learn more about a potter’s work. Unlike a museum visit, the focus here is on the potter’s work itself.

By Lake Talsi and at events

The Talsi Lake Promenade offers walks around Lake Talsi and views of the city’s landscape. The lake is encircled by a wooden footbridge and features a picturesque fountain. This combines the opportunity for a walk with specific features by the water.

The rooftop terraces and courtyard of the Talsi Cultural Centre and Creative Yard are suitable for concerts, farmers’ markets and other events. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the dates for your preferred period. 9Hill in Talsi offers disc golf and football billiards. This lets you take different interests into account when planning: an event date, a museum or craft visit, walks by the lake or either of these two activities.
