Vilgāle and Lake Vilgāle

Vilgāle can be explored through three distinct themes: the lake, the open-air stage and local history. An open-air stage overlooking Lake Vilgāle is located in the centre. Steps lead down from a hill by the stage to the shore. This brings together views, the lakeshore and cultural sites when planning your trip, without requiring you to limit your stay to just one activity. If you are looking for a hotel in Vilgāle, you can first decide whether your main priority is time by the water, an event or the history of the area.

Landscape and watercourse

Lake Vilgāle has an average depth of 1.9 metres and a maximum depth of 3.6 metres. The average and maximum depths answer different questions: the average describes the depth overall, while the maximum is the deepest recorded measurement. The lake is the largest in Kuldīga Municipality. The Rīva flows out of it and reaches the Baltic Sea. These details show two different scales: the comparison of size places the lake within the municipality, while its outflow connects it to the Baltic Sea.

Shore, views and events

There is a bathing area, changing cabin and recreation area on the shore. A wide belt of reeds surrounds Lake Vilgāle. An 80-metre-long pier is located at the lake. A pontoon pier extends into the water and was built in 2024. Steps lead down from the hill by the open-air stage to the shore; several viewpoints and rest areas are located along the steps. The lakeshore facilities therefore differ from the viewpoints on the slope: the bathing and recreation areas are for spending time by the water, while the steps provide access to viewpoints between the stage hill and the shore.

The “Peldam Vilgālē” swimming event has been held at Lake Vilgāle since 2015. Lake festivals are also held there. The swimming event is a specific named event, while lake festivals are another type of event held at the same body of water. If a lake festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the current event dates before making plans.

Local history at Pagastmāja

The building “Pagastmāja” in Vilgāle houses a local history exhibition. Its content may change, as it is tailored to the theme of each event. The Ēvalds Valters Memorial Room, opened in 2024, is also in the same building. It contains furniture, musical instruments, documents and paintings from the artists’ estate, as well as the two artists’ extensive library. These offer two cultural experiences side by side: the exhibition presents local history content that changes according to the event theme, while the memorial room commemorates Ēvalds Valters and houses the artists’ collection.

Getting there
