Ķimale: Manor House History and Ābelnieku Ancient Burial Ground
Accommodation in Ķimale
Ķimale can be understood through two historical themes and a longer cycling route. The manor house of Ķimales muiža represents a building history that stretches from the 18th century to a renovation in 1891. By contrast, Ābelnieku senkapi is a late Iron Age cemetery. In addition, a 42 km cycling route passes through Ķimale on its way back to Kuldīga. For planning your trip, the historical period, architectural changes and route are three distinct points of interest.
Manor house of Ķimales muiža
The manor house of Ķimales muiža was built in the 18th century. In 1891, it was renovated according to a design by the architect E. Zeiler. These details refer to different phases: the 18th century marks its construction, while 1891 dates the later renovation. E. Zeiler’s design was therefore for the renovation, not the original construction. If you are interested in architectural history, you can consider the house’s construction and later alteration as separate periods.
Ābelnieku senkapi
Ābelnieku senkapi is a late Iron Age cemetery in Ķimale. It consists of two adjacent, somewhat elongated burial mounds and a flat burial ground alongside them. The flat area is therefore clearly distinct from the two mounds; the description identifies both their forms and their position relative to each other. For trip planning, this offers a different historical focus from the manor house: here, the layout of a burial ground is central, while there, the focus is on the building’s construction and renovation history.
The two themes are far apart in time: Ābelnieku senkapi dates to the late Iron Age, while the manor house’s building history begins in the 18th century and has a further point of reference in the 1891 renovation. The archaeological period of the burial ground and the later building history of the manor house can thus be viewed as distinct chapters in the area’s history.
Cycling through Ķimale
The cycling route is 42 km long and runs from Kuldīga via Padure, the lakes Lielais Nabas ezers and Mazais Nabas ezers, the P108 state road and Ķimale, before returning to Kuldīga. The stated total distance covers the round trip from Kuldīga via the named stops and back, not just the section through Ķimale. Before setting out, check that the route is available and check road conditions.
Route 6419
Route 6419 runs along the Kuldīga–Padure–Ķimale–Kuldīga route and serves Ķimale as a stop. Both route descriptions mention Kuldīga, Padure and Ķimale; the cycling route description also includes the two Nabas lakes and the P108. On the bus route, Ķimale is listed as a stop, while the cycling route describes a total distance and additional waypoints. Check the timetable for route 6419 before making a specific journey.
