Place Names and River Landscape

Rumbenieki is the former name of Veldze in the Rumbas parish. Veldze is one of the largest settlements on the banks of the Veldze River. The river is a left-bank tributary of the Riežupe and flows through the parishes of Kabile and Rumbas in Kuldīga Municipality. The place name thus links local orientation with the waterway that shapes the area.

School History and Cultural Traces

The Old School of Veldze is of local cultural and historical significance. The four-grade elementary school was founded in 1878 as an Orthodox parish auxiliary school. In 1930, a Mazpulks youth organization was founded at the Veldze school. The two dates mark different aspects: the school’s church-influenced origins and a later chapter in organized youth life. The historic Veldze manor outbuilding was known as “Welsen Manor.” The open-air church “Bethel” holds baptisms, weddings, services, and special ceremonies outdoors in summer.

A Rolling Depression and a Winding River

The landscape of the Veldze Depression is a rolling glacial-lacustrine plain. The technical term refers to its formation through glacial and lake processes. The Veldze River makes wide loops through the depression; its lower course is highly winding.

Veldze Waterfall is between 0.8 and 0.9 meters high and 11 to 16 meters wide. Seasonal water conditions can change its appearance. For orientation, it is located in Rumbenieki on the Veldze River, about 140 meters south of an old lime kiln, about 400 meters before the confluence with the Riežupe, and about 400 meters downstream from the P120 road. A visitor notice from 2024 stated that both banks were private property and that no public access had been established. Check access conditions before visiting.

Nearby Destinations

A footbridge and cycle bridge spans the Riežupe nearby. It is 42 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. Next to the bridge is a recreation area managed by the Latvian State Forests, with a shelter, table, benches, and fire pit.

The “Pa Riežupes apkārtni” route offers a short loop of 18 kilometers and a long loop of 23 kilometers. The five-kilometer difference provides a clear guide when choosing the route length. The route passes through the “Ventas ieleja” Nature Reserve and “Riežupe” Nature Park.
