Ranka: Rankas Manor, Art and Trails
Accommodation in Ranka
Before looking for a hotel in Ranka, consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: Rankas Manor with its park and collections, historic cultural monuments, or a route on foot and by bike. At the manor, a library, vehicles, paintings and concerts sit alongside the park and a health trail; the Greenway follows a former railway line. This gives you different options to consider when planning your trip.
Rankas Manor: Park and Collections
A visit to Rankas Manor is complete with its sculpture park and a one-kilometre health trail. The park has three ponds called the Romantic Pond, the Landscape Pond and the Panorama Pond. The ponds and the trail are two distinct parts of a visit to the manor: the ponds shape the park, while the trail is a separate route with a stated length.
A library is also part of a complete visit. It contains 5,500 books and two pianos—a combination of books and instruments that offers a distinct focus for visitors interested in literature or music. A collection of antique vehicles features makes such as Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce and Volga. Rankas Manor also has an art gallery with works by Dace Saulīte, Aija Bāliņa, Sarmīte Caune, Edgars Mucenieks and Andris Vītols. The gallery adds fine art to the other collections; its holdings may change. If the works are important to your plans, check what is currently on display in advance.
Various concerts are held in the White Hall, including chamber music and other musical styles. If you want to link your visit to a particular musical event, check individual concert dates separately. Rankas Manor’s café serves visitors coffee, tea and hot lunch dishes. As service information may change, check the current offering in advance.
History and Cultural Monuments
Records of Rankas Manor date back to the 16th century. At that time, the estate was enfeoffed to vassals of the Archbishop of Riga. This early mention connects the estate’s history with a specific period and a particular feudal relationship.
The Rankas cemetery chapel is an architectural monument of local significance. It was built between 1932 and 1933 and renovated in 2007 for 3,000 lats. The Struve Geodetic Arc’s “Ranka” station provides a different focus: since 2017, it has been included in the state list of protected cultural monuments as an industrial monument of national significance. The cultural themes thus range from the history of the estate to architecture and geodetic surveying.
The Greenway
The Greenway was laid out along the former railway line through Rankas parish. The route allows cyclists and pedestrians to take in the area’s cultural and historical sites, observe nature and learn about business activity in Ranka. This focus differs from the collections and monuments: here, the emphasis is on movement, observing nature and gaining insight into the area. Check local route conditions and access when planning your trip.
