Galgauska is a destination for travelers interested in historic architecture, archaeological monuments and local culture. In the town and the Galgauskas pagasts, you’ll find a range of points of interest: protected buildings and graves, a cultural center, recreation spots along the Tirza, and a detailed cycling route. When planning your visit, it’s worth distinguishing between these locations and focusing on cultural history, landscape or outdoor activities, depending on your interests.

Architecture and Culture in Galgauska

Galgauska Primary School is a locally significant architectural monument dating from 1937. Another architectural monument is the building of the Galgauskas Dziedāšanas biedrība: it dates from 1924 and now serves as the cultural center of the Galgauskas pagasts. The cultural center is home to the amateur theater group “Rekvizīts.” A 2019 account describes the building as a reflection of 1920s building traditions and rural cultural life at the time. This building thus brings together historic architecture and a contemporary cultural function.

The Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist in Galgauska is a locally significant architectural monument. It was built sometime between about 1850 and 1860; the Mengden family graves are located behind the church. A local description dated July 23, 2024, notes that the church’s forest location is difficult to access. Bear this in mind when planning your visit and check conditions on site.

Manor History and Archaeological Monuments

According to a historical museum description, Galgauskas Manor had been owned by the noble von Mengden family since the 17th century. The manor’s buildings are a locally significant architectural monument dating from the early to late 19th century. The manor complex also includes the Melder House, another locally significant architectural monument, dating from around 1900. The dates span the manor’s ownership history in the 17th century, the buildings of the 19th century and an individual house from around 1900, offering several points of historical reference.

Archaeological monuments are also part of the area’s history. The Ausenes hillfort is located near Lazdukalni in the Galgauskas pagasts and is of local significance. The Narātu graves, also known as Kara kapi, are near the former settlement of Narāti. They are an archaeological monument of national significance. Bļodas kalns is a hill documented as a hillfort in the Vietassils forest, about 2 km southwest of Veiši. These location details point to different places within the pagasts.

The Tirza, Landscapes and Activities

Devonian rock outcrops occur along the section of the Tirza between Tirza and Galgauska. Large forest areas extend north of the Tirza in the Galgauskas pagasts. They cover 4,423.2 ha, or 45% of the administrative area. The river section and the forest areas offer different landscape features: geological outcrops along the Tirza on the one hand, and extensive forests north of the river on the other.

Publicly accessible recreation spots in the Galgauskas pagasts include DabasZāle, an open-air stage, and the cultural center. The Galgauska Mill HES on the Tirza is a recreation spot for locals and visitors; check conditions at the site before your visit. A detailed cycling route for the administrative area starts in the center and includes the Galgauska Mill HES. If you plan to use the route, check the signage and its condition in advance.

The Galgauskas pagasts also has an interactive map for exploring the administrative area. Color-coded QR codes let visitors explore the Galgauskas pagasts by following the community’s trails. Check the signs on site. Public bus services also operate in the pagasts, with stops in neighboring administrative areas and in Gulbene. Routes and stop patterns may change, so check the timetable for your travel date.
