Nature Trails, Wildlife and Views

The Vapramäe Landscape Protection Area covers 99.4 hectares. The Vapramäe Nature Trail is 3.6 kilometres long. These figures describe different scales: the area of a protected landscape and the length of a specific trail. In the park surrounding Alatskivi Castle, a walking trail leads through a forest of lindens, maples and oaks. The park covers approximately 130 hectares.

The Elistvere Animal Park trail includes a floating platform and a 12-metre-high observation tower overlooking bird-rich Lake Elistvere. At the animal park, you can observe animals that live or once lived in Estonian forests; they are kept in conditions as close to nature as possible. The Selli-Sillaotsa Nature Trail also has a 12-metre-high observation tower.

At Vapramäe Forell, visitors can fish for sturgeon or trout themselves. The activity is available seasonally. If you would like to combine nature experiences with a museum visit, the Ice Age Centre offers a distinctive thematic experience: it is located on the shore of Lake Saadjärv in Tartu County.

Museums Between Nature and the Present

The Ice Age Centre’s interactive exhibitions cover the last Ice Age, the present and the future. This timeline connects a look far back in time with questions about the world today and tomorrow. The Estonian Aviation Museum’s outdoor exhibition includes 32 aeroplanes and gliders, as well as six helicopters. At the historic Ülenurme Manor, the Estonian Agricultural Museum presents the development of Estonian agriculture and rural life. Cooking workshops are also offered there. It is advisable to check whether the cooking and ceramics workshops are available before your visit.

The Hellenurme Mill Museum is Estonia’s last historic watermill still in operation. The Bread House serves traditional Estonian rye bread made on site; availability may depend on the booking arrangements. These excursions focus on different aspects of cultural heritage: agriculture, life on a manor and the craft of milling. Another activity is offered by Vapramäe Forell, where visitors can fish for sturgeon or trout themselves; note that it is open seasonally.

Traditions on Lake Peipus

At the Kolkja Old Believers Museum, you can learn about the traditions and way of life of the Old Believers. The Kodavere Heritage Centre invites you to discover the distinctive linguistic and cultural heritage of the Kodavere parish.
