Discover Laeva
Accommodation in Laeva
Laeva brings together nature, local history and community life. Near the village, a nature trail leads to the edge of Laeva Bog; in the village, the cultural centre, library and cemetery reveal other facets of the area. For winter activities, there are cross-country ski trails and an ice rink. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Laeva, you can start by considering whether nature, cultural history or physical activity will be the main focus of your stay.
Nature around Laeva
The Selli-Sillaotsa nature trail is a 4.7-kilometre circular route near Laeva and is accessible on foot only. It leads to the edge of Laeva Bog. Its length and circular route give the nature outing a clearly defined scope: the route itself is part of the experience, not merely a path to a single viewpoint.
The Suurtüki observation tower is located on the nature trail. From there, the views stretch far across the surrounding area. This means that two different landscape features stand out along the same route: the path to the edge of the bog and the view from the tower. The 4.7 kilometres refer to the circular route as a whole; the observation tower adds its own perspective on the surroundings to the route description.
Local history and culture
Laeva Cultural Centre is still housed in the building that opened on 14 December 1914 as the clubhouse of the Laeva Music and Singing Society. Today, the cultural centre serves as a community hub and hosts events for locals and visitors from elsewhere. These include theatre performances, dance evenings, family days and other gatherings. The cultural centre also organises exhibitions. A visit can therefore combine a historic landmark with various forms of community life today.
Laeva Library also has a clearly defined distinction: it is described as the oldest of the ten libraries in the Tartu municipality library network. This is different from the cultural centre’s events programme: the library’s significance lies in its position within the municipal network, while the cultural centre serves as a community hub and hosts events and exhibitions.
Laeva Cemetery is home to a monument to the leaders who rose up against Tsarist rule in 1905–1906 and were executed by a Tsarist court. The cemetery thus commemorates a specific period in history. The cemetery caretaker can provide information about locating burial sites and using grave plots.
Winter activities
There are cross-country ski trails around Laeva Primary School. The school’s ice rink offers skate hire. The Tartu municipality sports school endeavours to keep the rink free of snow, weather and ice conditions permitting. As this depends on the conditions, it is advisable to check them before planning a visit. The ski trails and ice rink offer different winter activities and complement Laeva’s nature and culture attractions.
