Nõo brings together different themes for travel planning: trails and scenery around Vapramäe, the observatory in Tõravere, and Luke Manor with its park. There are also historical details in Nõo itself. You can choose what will shape your stay based on your interests: nature, astronomy or culture.

Vapramäe: Trails and Landscapes Through the Seasons

The Vapramäe Landscape Protection Area covers 99.4 hectares. It protects a steep-sided ridge hill and a forest community. The hilly landscape typical of southern Estonia begins in the southern part of Nõo municipality. The Vapramäe nature trail starts at the former Vapramäe bus stop on the old Tartu–Valga road. It is 3.6 kilometres long, and there is also a 1.6-kilometre children's trail. These two routes offer different distances for planning a walk.

The season also affects the activities available: Vapramäe's summer hiking trails are suitable for skiing and sledding in winter. There is a picnic area with a fire pit on the Vapramäe hiking trail by the Elva River. The Elva at Vapramäe is suitable for fishing and water hikes. If you prefer cycling, VVV has several cycling routes in Vitipalu and Vellavere. You can arrange to be accompanied by a hiking guide by phone. VVV also offers various nature hiking packages; dates can be arranged by phone.

Tõravere: Observatory and Astronomy

The Tartu Observatory in Tõravere offers the general public guided tours, active learning and training by prior arrangement. Astrophysical observations there use a 1.5-metre and a 0.6-metre reflecting telescope, as well as an automated 0.3-metre robotic telescope. The sizes and different types of telescopes offer a tangible insight into the technical side of the observatory.

The site's history can also be placed on a timeline: construction of the observatory began in 1958 on a site known as “Windy Hill.” The main building was completed in 1963 and officially opened in September 1964. There is also a model of the solar system at the observatory, marked by cedars. It depicts the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Advance booking is important for guided tours, so plan them as a separate part of your trip.

Luke Manor and Nõo's Cultural Heritage

Luke Manor was first mentioned in 1557. Tours by SA Luke Mõis introduce the history of the manor house, as well as Kärnerimaja, Valitsemaja and Käsitöökoda. The park at Luke Manor is designed in the neo-Baroque style and features terraces, unusually shaped trees, concrete lions, an Eve sculpture and a restored pond system. Kärnerimaja was restored in 2005 and now houses a café. A visit therefore offers a chance to see both the grounds and individual buildings and how they are used.

The building is now called Luke mõisa Käsitöökoda; it is home to a community of people who enjoy handicrafts. Nõo itself is home to the Nõo Church of St. Lawrence. One of its distinctive features is a wooden roof turret dating from 1819. The church also houses Tõnis Grenzstein's 1895 altarpiece, “Kristus ristil.” The two dates refer to different elements: the roof turret and the altarpiece.

Plan Your Journey and Stay

Nõo municipality has bus and rail connections. The important Saint Petersburg–Riga transit route (Narva–Valga) and the Tallinn–Valga railway line pass through it. Nõo is about 20 minutes by car from Tartu. For a specific journey, it is worth checking the current timetables. The destinations described offer different highlights: Vapramäe combines trails with seasonal activities, Tõravere offers insights into astronomy by prior arrangement, and Luke Manor brings together a manor house, park and cultural history. Plan your trip around the themes that interest you most during your stay.
