Discover Vissi: Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Vissi
A landmark in Vissi
A specific point of reference for a trip to Vissi is Vapramäe Loodusmaja in Vissi küla. There, you can get information about the VVV hiking trails and the Elva recreation area.
Landscape and water
The Vapramäe Landscape Protection Area was established in 1959 to protect a steep-sided esker ridge and forest communities. Nature planning is therefore about more than just trail lengths: the terrain and the protected forest communities are also a focus in their own right. Those interested in the landscape and nature conservation can gain a different perspective than when choosing based on distance or activity.
Lake Vissi is connected to the Elva River by ditches. Near Vapramäe, the Elva is suitable for fishing and water hiking. At the lake, the connection to the river is the main point; on the Elva near Vapramäe, visitors can go fishing or water hiking. If you would like to include bodies of water in your travel plans, these different aspects can help you choose the focus of an outing.
Trails by length and season
There are two specific trail lengths to choose from when planning a route: the Vapramäe looduse-õpperada nature trail is 3.6 km long, while the Vapramäe lasterada children’s trail is 1.6 km long. The shorter trail is therefore two kilometres shorter. The lengths allow for a direct comparison of the distances; the names also distinguish the nature trail from the children’s trail. When planning, you can take both the distance and the type of trail indicated by its name into account.
In winter, Vapramäe’s summer hiking trails are suitable for skiing and sledding. The season therefore affects the intended activity on these trails. Marked cycling trails are also indicated at Vapramäe Loodusmaja. This means you can consider the season and type of trail as separate factors when planning.
Art and history
The Vapramäe kunstirada art trail combines nature and artistic creation and starts at Vapramäe Loodusmaja in Vissi küla. Kerikmägi adds another connection to culture and history: the hillfort is one of Estonia’s smallest. The first Nõo district song festival was held in Vapramäe in 1926. The art trail, hillfort and song festival represent different interests: artistic creation, a historic site and a dated cultural event.
Practical information at Vapramäe Loodusmaja
There is a parking lot at Vapramäe Loodusmaja; eco-toilets are located at the starting points of the Vapramäe hiking trails. The centre offers nature excursions and the option of a guided tour. If a guided tour is important for your stay, check the dates in advance. Loodusmaja has spacious rooms for lessons as well as a separate classroom where visitors can learn about nature through play. This educational aspect of the centre may also be relevant to travellers interested in nature education.
