Luunja Parish: Roses, River Routes and Bog Walks
Accommodation in Luunja Parish
If you are looking for a hotel in Luunja Parish, choosing a travel theme can help you find your bearings. The rose garden and manor history offer a different focus from the Emajõgi Nature Trail or bog walks in Emajõe-Suursoo. Consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay; it is also worth factoring specific seasonal conditions into your plans for river and nature activities.
Roses and Manor History
A total of 58 rose varieties grow in the Luunja Rose Garden. One of them is named “Luunja”; it was bred by Estonian rose breeder Mart Ojasalu. In the late 19th century, Luunja Manor Park was redesigned as an informal landscape park. This offers garden enthusiasts two different perspectives: the variety of roses in the rose garden and the historical development of the landscape park. From the viewpoint with the yellow window, you can see buildings in the Luunja manor complex, including the gardener’s house, the distillery and the forge, as well as the park.
River and Seasonal Planning
The hand-operated Kavastu Ferry began operating in 1899 and is Estonia’s last operating river ferry. It will not operate during the 2026 season because of the uncertain condition of its access ramp on the riverbank. Boats can travel from the Luunja landing stage along the Emajõgi to Tartu or Lake Võrtsjärv.
Trails and Bog Landscape
The 3 km-long Emajõgi Nature Trail runs along the banks of the Emajõgi, through its floodplain and through wet woodland. It is accessible by wheelchair in parts; during high water, it may be impassable. If you plan to take the trail, check the current conditions before your visit, especially during high water.
Bog walks can be arranged in Emajõe-Suursoo throughout the year. In wet conditions, rafts or boats are recommended; in cold weather, skis or snowshoes. The difference between the two nature activities is clear: the nature trail is 3 km long, while bog walks can be arranged year-round and recommendations depend on wet or cold conditions. The historic winter routes in Emajõe-Suursoo have been mapped and designated for exploration. The Emajõe-Suursoo Nature Centre is run by Luunja Municipality.
Horse Riding and Rural Experiences
Saksa Riding School offers riding lessons for beginners and people with sporting goals, as well as individual training sessions. In summer, it holds five-day riding camps for children and young people; no prior experience is required. The school also offers celebrations where guests can get to know horses, other farm animals and country life. Riding camps and bog walks differ in timing: riding camps take place in summer, while bog walks can be arranged year-round.
The 2024 edition of the Kavastu Uhhaa and Fish Festival included a competition to name the best uhhaa cook.
