Saaremaa reveals itself through protected landscapes, coastlines and historic buildings. The island is part of the West Estonian Archipelago Biosphere Reserve. The habitats in this biosphere reserve include juniper and coastal meadows, as well as swamps and peat bogs. Those who want to explore the island on foot will find nature trails that are well marked and equipped with information boards.

Nature Trails and Landscapes

A 260-kilometre hiking trail connects existing nature and hiking trails through Saaremaa’s most beautiful natural areas. The coastal trails can be explored on foot or by bicycle; the NaviCup app can be used for this. Check its availability before use. The Koigi study trail is located in the Koigi Landscape Protection Area and adds to the island’s varied natural attractions.

The Kaali meteorite field comprises a landscape with a main crater 110 metres wide and 22 metres deep, as well as eight smaller craters. These dimensions give the geological site a clearly defined distinction. On the north coast, Panga Cliff reaches a maximum height of 21.3 metres and extends for about 2.5 kilometres. Activities at Panga Recreation Area include watching the sunset, picnicking, birdwatching and nature photography.

Coastal Views and Vilsandi

The west coast of Harilaid is suitable for observing birds and seals. On Vilsandi, an eight-kilometre study trail follows the south coast along the coral reefs to a lighthouse, then returns through the forests of the north coast. The route as described thus connects coastal stretches and forest sections along a single trail.

The Vilsandi National Park Visitor Centre provides information about hiking trails, campfire sites and places of interest in the national park. Its permanent exhibition covers the nature, history and cultural heritage of the protected area. The centre also offers free nature events and natural history education programmes by prior registration; the programme may vary.

Castles, Churches and Striking Buildings

Kuressaare Castle is the only completely preserved castle complex in the Baltics. The Saaremaa Museum in the castle has permanent exhibitions on Saaremaa’s history, contemporary history and natural environment. St Catherine’s Church in Karja offers a different perspective on regional architectural and art history: it dates from the 13th century and is known for its carvings and stone sculptures.

Reomäe Convent is the only traditional convent with a communal way of life in the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church. Its main church was built in 1873, and the convent’s iconostasis is listed as a protected monument. The Sõrve Lighthouse is another distinctive coastal landmark: at 52 metres, it is the tallest lighthouse on the Baltic Sea.

Island Cuisine and Activities

Juniper is used on Saaremaa to make a variety of products: syrups, infusions, sweets and spices, as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic gins. Smoked fish is considered indispensable on Saaremaa; home-brewed beer is described as an accompaniment to smoked fish. These ingredients and products offer a distinct insight into the island’s culinary traditions.

Asva Viking Village has an animal and bird park; archery and axe throwing are also offered there. The activities may change. Alongside landscapes and cultural sites, Saaremaa therefore also offers specific activities whose availability and format you can take into account when planning your trip.
