Mustjala: Churches and Musical Tradition
Accommodation in Mustjala
Mustjala brings together two churches with different building histories, a music festival and the parish’s historic singing tradition. If you want to make culture the focus of your stay, architecture, community history and music can provide a common thread for your trip.
Churches with different historical backgrounds
Mustjala Anna Church dates back to a chapel built in 1605 near Mustjala Manor (Mustelhof). In 1646, the chapel became the church of the independent Mustjala parish. The present building was constructed in 1863. Its history thus spans a chapel near the manor, the development of the parish and the church building that stands today. The furnishings also reflect later periods: Gustav Terkmann built the organ for Mustjala Church in 1903, and Rudolf Sepp created the new altarpiece in 1938. The building, organ and altarpiece represent different stages in the church’s history.
Community history and architecture come together at Mustjala Prohvet Eeliase Church. On 24 October 1848, the Mustjala Prohvet Eeliase Orthodox congregation was established for Estonian Orthodox believers. The present church building was completed in 1873; the Mustjala church on Saaremaa is dedicated to the Prophet Elijah. It is a cross-domed stone building with a central dome tower and four smaller corner towers. The churches therefore have different points of interest: Anna Church has a building and furnishing history spanning several periods, while Prohvet Eeliase Church is notable for the history of its Orthodox congregation and its domed architecture.
The Mustjala Anna congregation holds services on Sundays at 3 p.m., alternating between its church, the parish house and Mustjala Pension. If you plan to attend a service, check the venue before your trip, as it changes.
Music: festival and singing tradition
The Mustjala Music Festival has been held since 1995, presenting classical music and jazz with guest artists from Estonia and abroad. If attending the festival is important to your trip, plan around the announced dates.
The tradition of singing competitions in the historic Mustjala parish continued into the 1960s. The parish was also particularly rich in Estonian regilaul folk songs. These are distinct musical connections: the festival presents classical music and jazz, while singing competitions and regilaul are part of the parish’s historic song culture.
A seasonal stop in Mustjala village
Mustjala Käsitöösahver summer café and craft shop is located in Mustjala village on the north coast of Saaremaa, right next to Anna Church. As a summer café, it is a seasonal stop. Its location next to the church links this stop with another named place in the village without conflating their distinct features.
Travel planning and finding a hotel
Several factors may affect your travel dates: the festival dates, the Sunday service, whose venue changes, and the summer café’s season. Check the specific dates, the service venue and the café’s opening times if any of these matter to you.
