Discover Ruhnu: Coasts, Culture and Island History
Accommodation in Ruhnu
Ruhnu combines striking coastal landscapes with a distinctive island history and vibrant craft traditions. When planning your stay, it is worth exploring both: the beaches differ considerably, while the museum, churches, lighthouse and cultural offerings reveal different aspects of the island’s history.
Coast and Nature on Ruhnu
Ruhnu Hoiuala in Ruhnu küla protects coastal meadows as well as foredunes, white dunes, grey dunes and wooded dunes. It lies within the internationally important Ruhnu natural area (EE0040462). The beaches also have distinct coastal features: Limo Beach is Ruhnu’s main summer beach thanks to its large stretch of sand. By contrast, the eastern section of the beach at Kuunsi Cape is narrow and ten metres wide, with a dense covering of gravel and pebbles. West of the cape is a low sandy beach.
These differences are useful to know when getting a sense of Ruhnu’s coastline in advance: at Limo Beach, the stretch of sand defines the character of the summer beach, while at eastern Kuunsi Beach, gravel and pebbles predominate. The information about Kuunsi Beach refers to its eastern section; the sandy beach west of the cape is a different kind of shoreline.
Island History: Museum, Churches and Lighthouse
The Ruhnu Museum focuses on the work and everyday life of the island’s residents. It displays around 300 objects they used at work and in daily life, along with photographs and texts about the island’s unique history and nature. The museum also displays quartz tools dating back around 8,000 years, used by seal hunters, offering a remarkable glimpse into the distant past.
St. Magdalene’s wooden church is the oldest known surviving wooden building in Estonia; construction began in 1643. Both churches on Ruhnu are used for services, concerts, lectures and exhibitions. Another distinctive landmark is the Ruhnu Lighthouse, built in 1877 on Håubjärre Hill, the highest point on the island. It is the only surviving lighthouse of its type in the Baltic Sea region.
The Korsi Farmstead is also part of the island’s architectural heritage. The farmstead is around two hundred years old and is considered the world’s only almost entirely preserved farm complex of the Ruhnu Swedes. Different forms of cultural heritage stand side by side on Ruhnu: a home and workplace, two churches and a lighthouse, each with its own history.
Crafts and Activities
Ruhnu Kultuuriait preserves local cultural heritage and revives traditional crafts and ways of life. Workshops include braiding bands and nets, rope-making, loom knitting, Ruhnu knitwear and pottery made from local clay. Groups must book workshops in advance; also check seasonal availability before your trip.
Another local tradition concerns the Estonian Landrace sheep, which have been raised on Ruhnu’s farms since the time of the Ruhnu Swedes. Their double-layered wool is particularly suitable for felting, but can also be spun into yarn. In summer, Ruhnu Rahvamaja presents exhibitions and historical film programmes. In winter, the programme includes film evenings, as well as evenings for handicrafts, pottery, board games and dancing. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, confirm the specific dates in advance.
Options for getting active and exploring the island also vary: Avasta Ruhnu offers nature walks and village tours, and rents out bicycles and SUP boards. At Abelberg Farms, you can visit independently or with the hosts; offerings include walks and small adventures that introduce Ruhnu’s stories and places. With Vetikafarm ja kalastusretked, visitors head out by boat with a local professional fisherman while nets are set or hauled in. For group workshops and the activities described, it is advisable to confirm dates and availability in advance.
