Discover Muhu Parish: Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Muhu Parish
In Muhu Parish, experiences range from museum and architectural history to nature trails and regional culinary experiences. When planning a stay, you can choose what to focus on according to your interests: Muhu tells its story through historic buildings and the landscape, while trails, a windmill and local offerings reveal other sides of the destination.
Museum Life, Architecture and Village History
The Tooma farmstead of the Muhu Museum is the birthplace of writer Juhan Smuul. The former village schoolyard, Koolielu, tells the story of education and community life in the region. Traditional Muhu textiles, on display at Välja farmstead, the museum’s office building, offer a different cultural perspective: colourful embroidery and patterns are at the heart of this exhibition. Together, these places explore a range of subjects—from literary life and the history of community education to textile crafts.
The Muhu St Catherine’s Church also combines a clear historical context with an architectural distinction: it has been mentioned in chronicles since 1267 and is an early Gothic building. Koguva, in turn, is Estonia’s best-preserved village ensemble. Those interested in historic architectural forms and traditional village layouts will find a different perspective here than at the museum or church.
History in the Landscape and at the Windmill
Near Võiküla, military history can be traced through tangible remains. Construction of Coastal Defence Battery No. 36, with its 10-inch guns, began in 1915; during the First World War, it belonged to the 1st Battalion of the fortified position on the Muhu Strait. The battery is well preserved in the landscape, although its gun emplacements and imposing concrete parapet are partly overgrown. Võiküla’s cobbled road is in good condition. Since conditions on the site and road can change over time, it is advisable to check their condition before visiting.
Another place where history unfolds outdoors is the Eemu Windmill. Information boards explain its construction and operation; First World War defensive trenches lie beside the mill. Technical explanations and historical traces are thus found side by side, without either being limited to the same subject.
Nature Trails and Outdoor Activities
The roughly 300-metre-long Üügu cliff shows how erosion created cave-like cavities in the limestone. The Muhu nature trail mostly follows a field track intended for walking. Its sections vary in length and marking: the longer section is marked in blue, while the shorter one is marked in red on trees and stones. As the markings may be updated, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
Military history is also featured on a nature and educational trail: near Muhu Adventure Park, there is a trail about military history and the plants, birds and insects found there. At the Adventure Park itself, visitors can explore Soviet-era military roads. The two offerings have different focuses—one is about exploring the roads, while the other is an educational trail covering nature and history.
