When planning a stay in Lalli, specific local features can help you decide whether the destination suits your interests: a sacred sliding stone with two slide tracks, a public swimming spot, protected natural areas and recurring local events. The themes range from coastal and marine landscapes to community traditions.

Natural areas around Lalli

The Rannaniidi Nature Reserve extends across the territories of the villages of Lalli, Lehtmetsa, Lõetsa, Raugi and Vahtraste. Its conservation objectives include primary coastal ridges (1210), sea-facing cliffs (1230), juniper formations (5130), alvars (6280*), springs and spring fens (7160), moor-grass meadows (6410), and dry calcareous grasslands with significant orchid populations (6210*). The range therefore extends from coastal landforms and wet habitats to dry meadows.

Another natural feature is the Väinameri protected area: it includes the village of Lalli as well as the adjacent coastal region and marine area. The protected areas have different spatial focuses: Rannaniidi extends across the territories of several villages and encompasses various habitat types; Väinameri includes the adjoining coast and sea. These differences help you understand Lalli’s connection to nature more precisely.

Liukivi and local traditions

The Lalli liukivi is an ancient sacred stone with two slide tracks on one side; it is the only sliding stone on Muhu. The Tihuse horse tourism trail passes by the stone, which is also used for tourism. Here, a tangible part of cultural heritage meets a named route for horse tourism. Lalli itself has also been celebrated in songs repeatedly. According to some accounts, the first local farmstead is mentioned as early as the mid-16th century. Alongside the sacred stone, this gives Lalli’s local history another historical point of reference.

The Tähvena Talgupäevad are an event that has become a tradition and is open to everyone. In addition, a gathering around a bonfire takes place every year on St John’s Day. If you plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the latest dates before booking.

Swimming spot and harbour

Lalli has a public swimming spot with a changing cabin. It is often used by residents of other villages and summer visitors. This is a useful detail when deciding whether to include a place to swim in your plans.

Lalli Harbour offers another kind of connection to the water. In the 2025 general plan of Muhu Rural Municipality, it is classified as a small harbour of regional importance; recreational fishers go out to sea from there. While the swimming spot serves as a public bathing area, the harbour is also distinguished by its use by this group of fishers. This makes it possible to understand the two waterside locations in terms of their different roles.
