Tlumačov: Stud Farm, St. Martin’s Church and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Tlumačov
For a trip to Tlumačov, you can focus on three main attractions: the stud farm, with its historic buildings and visitor experiences that require booking; the parish church of St. Martin; and cycling routes connected to Kroměříž and Záhlinice. If you are looking for a hotel in Tlumačov, you can first decide whether a stud farm tour, the church’s architectural history or a cycling trip will shape your stay. This lets you plan around the activities you actually have in mind.
Tlumačov Stud Farm: Historic Courtyards and Visitor Experiences
The Tlumačov Stud Farm is an important technical monument. The complex originated as a farmyard in the 18th century, which was later converted into a stud farm. It has largely retained the appearance it had at the beginning of the 20th century. Two large inner courtyards define the complex. The entire complex, including its significant buildings, was declared a cultural monument on 15 July 2011.
Public tours take visitors through the historic stables and buildings that form part of the cultural monument; advance booking is required. The stud farm also offers carriage rides of around 60 minutes by prior arrangement. If you plan to take part in either activity, make sure to book before your stay.
The Parish Church of St. Martin and Its History
The Parish Church of St. Martin of Tours and Sabaria stands in the centre of Tlumačov, on the main road. Its aligned layout comprises a recessed rectangular presbytery—the chancel—and a massive bell tower on the west façade. A Baroque-style stone crucifix stands in front of the entrance.
The church’s origins are generally dated to the reign of Wenceslaus I (1230–1253), or to the second quarter of the 13th century. It may date from the period after the Mongol invasion of Moravia in 1241. In 1585, a church tower was added. After a fire in 1691, the church was restored as early as 1695. Its building history thus spans its medieval origins, later alterations and restoration after the fire.
Pond, Nature Conservation and Cycling Routes
The Tlumačovská tůňka is located on the western edge of Tlumačov, on the right-hand side of the road to Kvasice. The water body and its immediate surroundings serve as a breeding ground for the edible frog, marsh frog, common toad, European tree frog, fire-bellied toad and grass snake. The Tlumačovská tůňka also protects endangered and legally protected amphibian species, as well as threatened species of freshwater algae and cyanobacteria.
From Tlumačov, a flat, family-friendly cycling trip of about 12 kilometres leads to Kroměříž. It runs mostly away from road traffic, using cycle paths and paved tracks. The route passes the Záhlinice Ponds and runs through floodplain forests along the Morava River. Its length, flat terrain and route through the pond and river landscape give you concrete details to consider when planning this ride during your stay.
Cycle Route 5181 also runs alongside the railway line through Tlumačov and continues towards Záhlinice. This means that both a trip to Kroměříž and another named route through the town feature among Tlumačov’s cycling options.
