Ublo: Hiking and Traces of the Baťa Railway
Accommodation in Ublo
Ublo lies in the hills of the Vizovická vrchovina, where forests, meadows and pastures shape the surrounding landscape. For travellers choosing a destination with hiking trails and industrial heritage in mind, Ublo offers specific points of interest: trails pass through the cadastral area, and the unfinished Baťa railway left behind structural traces. There are also preserved wooden houses, a memorial in the village centre and historical evidence of the settlement’s development.
Hiking Around Ublo
The hiking trail from Vizovice via Ublo is about 14 km long. It has a steeper ascent at Suchý vrch; after that, it runs mainly through the forest along the contour lines. The route therefore changes from a marked ascent to a mostly wooded section that follows the contour lines. A hiking trail from Vizovice runs parallel to the yellow trail marker below Suchý vrch. A yellow-marked hiking trail also passes through the cadastral area of Ublo. From Vartovna, green- and yellow-marked hiking trails head towards Ublo and the U Hruška viewpoint. These different starting points and landmarks provide specific reference points when including hikes in your travel plans. As conditions on the hiking route may change seasonally, check the current route description before setting out.
The Baťa Railway and UBlanka Tunnel
A hiking route along the unfinished Baťa railway reaches Ublo, where the UBlanka tunnel is planned as its first stop. The tunnel is a concrete remnant of the railway project left unfinished by Baťa. In Ublo, the path along the Baťa railway line runs above the tunnel and then becomes a grassy railway embankment again. Both the tunnel and the embankment are therefore part of this route. Construction work on the Vizovice–Ublo section of the Baťova dráha began in July 1934. The “Kapka mezi dvěma zámky” cycle route also uses the railway track: on the return leg, it meets it again in Ublo and climbs via Jasenná to Vartovna. This also gives you a useful distinction when planning: the hiking route follows the unfinished railway, while the cycle route incorporates the railway track on its return leg.
Village and History
The first written record of the Ublo settlement dates from 1450 and documents the local bailiff’s estate. The bell in the bell tower bears the year 1784. A memorial to those who fell in the First World War stands in the village centre. Preserved wooden houses are part of the region’s folk architecture, and the Ubelské divadlo continues the local amateur theatre tradition. These places and traditions add further facets of the village to its landscape and railway remains: historical remembrance, architectural heritage and local cultural life. If you are considering Ublo for a stay, you can also explore its history and village character, alongside its hiking trails.
