Stone masonry, religious history and protected nature give Mrákotín U Telče a range of distinctive features. The stone masonry exhibition connects the municipality’s history with the craft of working stone. There is also a longer hike and a cycling route to Javořice. If you are looking for hotels in Mrákotín U Telče, these themes can help you choose what to explore, depending on whether you are more interested in cultural history, nature or outdoor activities.

Stone Masonry and Local History

The stone masonry exhibition in Mrákotín presents the municipality’s past and present, as well as the history of stone masonry. A particular focus is the monolith for Prague Castle: the exhibition covers both its production and its transport. The making of a large stone roller is another topic. So the exhibition is not only about finished works, but also about the craft and technical processes involved in working and moving large quantities of stone.

On display are hand and machine tools, equipment for geologists and explosives used to blast rock faces. A wooden protective shelter was dismantled at a quarry, reduced in size and reassembled in the exhibition. Other items include tools, unfinished products and protective equipment used by stonemasons. Together, these objects offer insight into different aspects of the work, from the equipment used to the materials and protective gear.

The Church of St. Giles

The Church of St. Giles also reflects the area’s long history. The church and rectory are documented from 1398, and parish registers have been kept since 1661. Originally a Gothic building dating from the 14th century, the church was remodeled in the Neoclassical style in 1806–1807. This distinguishes two aspects of its history: the church’s Gothic origins and its later Neoclassical transformation. The documented history of the church and rectory, along with the date of the parish registers, adds a record of church life to the building’s history.

Protected Nature Around Mrákotín

The Horní Mrzatec natural monument and site of European importance encompasses the cadastral areas of Mrákotín u Telče and Lhotka u Mrákotína. The pond there is low to moderately nutrient-rich, with clear water and a sandy bottom. It lies at the edge of the extensive Javořice forest massif and is considered a landscape feature of high aesthetic value. The pond, water and forest massif give this landscape a character distinct from that of the stone masonry exhibition or the historic church.

Another protected site is the Horní Nekolov natural monument, which preserves a stand of beech trees on the southeast slope of Široký kámen. It lies about 3 km northeast of Mrákotín, at elevations of 690 to 772 m. Horní Mrzatec and Horní Nekolov protect different features: a pond on the edge of the forest massif in one case, and a stand of beech trees on a slope in the other. Visitors interested in nature destinations will find two clearly distinct landscape features here.

Hiking and Cycling

The 18 km Mrákotín–Bradlo–Hradisko hike takes about 5.5 hours and starts in Mrákotín. It passes through Dobrá Voda before returning to the vicinity of the village; the return leg follows a yellow-marked hiking trail. The route includes the 760 m-high Hradisko rock massif, which offers views of the surrounding countryside. Some sections are rocky, with steep climbs. The route’s length, approximate duration and terrain description each give a different sense of the hike.

For cycling, another option is the route from Mrákotín to Javořice via cycle route No. 1113. The two outings differ in both mode of travel and destination: the described hike goes on foot via Bradlo and Hradisko and returns to the vicinity of Mrákotín, while the cycling route leads to Javořice. When planning, you can choose between a longer hike with described sections of terrain and a ride along the cycle route.
