Doupě lies in the valley of the Třešťský potok. A large part of its cadastral area is located in the northeastern part of the Řásenská vrchovina in the Jihlavské vrchy. This brings together a specific valley setting and the broader highland landscape as two different ways of orienting yourself. Roštejn Castle is also located within Doupě’s cadastral area. This offers several clearly distinct themes to help you plan your trip: the architectural history of a Gothic-Renaissance hunting castle, a distinctive geological feature in the Roštejn Game Preserve, protected forest habitats, and a gravel route that passes through Doupě. You can therefore explore the area through its cultural history, nature, or a longer cycling route; each theme reveals a different side of the surroundings.

Landscape and a geological feature

West of the castle, a distinctive frost-weathering landform developed at the end of a small valley in the Roštejn Game Preserve. It is known as a nivation niche or nivation hollow. Both terms refer to this geological feature; the technical term classifies it as a natural landform. The focus therefore shifts when comparing it with the castle: at Roštejn, architecture and construction period take center stage, while at the nivation hollow, the shape of the terrain is the main feature. The landscape thus brings together a historic building and a distinctive natural landform created by frost weathering.

Roštejn Castle and its architectural history

Roštejn is a Gothic-Renaissance hunting castle dating from the 14th century. It stands on a rocky hill at an elevation of 677 metres; its seven-sided tower is particularly unusual. The castle was built continuously during the 14th and 15th centuries by the Lords of Hradec. Two aspects help place it in context: the tower’s shape and rocky setting describe the building, while its continuous construction by the Lords of Hradec tells its architectural history. Roštejn thus combines a specific architectural feature with a history of construction that spanned the 14th and 15th centuries. This makes the castle a clearly defined cultural-historical theme within Doupě.

Forest habitats and protected species

The Roštejn Game Preserve protects old, primeval-like acidophilous beech forests, flower-rich beech forests, and scree forests. It also protects populations of the hermit beetle (Osmoderma barnabita) and the barbastelle bat (Barbastella barbastellus). This means that the area’s natural features include both different forest habitats and two named animal populations. Unlike the nivation hollow, which refers to a single geological landform, the preserve’s protection encompasses several forest types and species. This adds a distinct ecological perspective to the cultural-historical focus.

Doupě on a gravel route

A 70-kilometre gravel route runs from Telč through Doupě to Roštejn and through the picturesque region below Javořice. Both the total distance and the sequence of places named provide concrete reference points for planning the route. The route places Doupě within a wider regional itinerary, while the castle’s history offers a more narrowly defined cultural-historical focus. If you would like to include a longer cycling route in your travel plans, the stated distance provides a concrete measure. These themes therefore differ not only in content, but also in whether you are interested in a building, protected nature, or a route through the region.
